County League: Just call Connellsville the ‘comeback kids’

By Jim Kriek For The 3 min read

CONNELLSVILLE – One of the favorite cliches in sports reminds that when things get tough the tough get going, but Saturday that could have been paraphrased to note that when there are two out the winners get going. Connellsville struck twice with two out, once to get its scoring started and once to wrap it all up on the way to a 10-7 win over Brownsville in Fayette County Baseball League play.

The Warriors (5-3-1) scored five runs in the third to go ahead for good, then held off a last threat by Brownsville in the fourth. Kevin McIntosh worked a 7-hitter for Connellsville, including Dane Durinzi’s two-run homer, Kevin Dvorchak’s double and two singles by manager Dan Kupets and Jason Cramer.

Brownsville reached McIntosh for all of its runs and six hits through four innings, but over the last three he ceded only a single by Cramer in the fifth and had a run of eight outs to close the game. Ironically, he got the last out, a popup to the mound by Cramer.

McIntosh said, “It was hot out there on the mound, and I was real loose after three. My arm felt a little tight yesterday but I iced it and was ready to go today. We were missing a couple regulars today, but we moved some players around, and I had a real good defense making the plays back of me.”

Coach Tom Angeline said, “The defense was real important to us. Offensively, we got some timely hits to go with good defense, and over the last three innings, Mac was dominant on the mound.”

At bat, the Warriors counted doubles by Brian Sass and Andy Griffith, a double and single by J.W. Eddy and three singles by Bill Gabonay.

Brownsville led 3-0 after its first turn at bat on Durinzi’s game leadoff walk, a hit batter, a passed ball, Dvorchak’s fly ball, a walk, Dan Kupets’ single and an error.

Connellsville came right back with three runs to tie. Starter-loser Ed Sumego retired the first two batters, then Bob Keslar walked, Griffith doubled him in and Eddy and McIntosh singled around an error.

Brownsville went up 4-3 in the third. Dvorchak was safe on an error to lead off, stole second and scored on Dan Kupets’ single.

Connellsville took the lead back for good with five runs in its third on Keslar’s single, a walk to Griffith, Eddy’s double, Gabonay’s single, McIntosh’s fly ball, an error, and Sass’ two out, two-run double.

Brownsville cut that to 8-7 in the fourth with Cramer’s single, Durinzi’s drive over the fence in center, Brumley’s single, Dvorchak’s double, a hit batter to load the bases and a walk to Casey Kupets.

Connellsville wrapped it up in the home fourth. The first two batters flied to center, then Gabonay singled, McIntosh and Miskanin walked to load the bases and Tom Angeline Jr. singled for two.

Angeline added, “We battled strong with two outs. In most games the first inning is the worst for us, but today we got a good start in the first.”

Brownsville manager Dan Kupets said, “We have had a rough stretch. We made a good start today, but then we didn’t hit. We got runners on, but couldn’t get them around. Matt pitched a strong game for them, keeping us off balance once he got the lead.”

Both teams play today, Connellsville hosts Carmichaels at 1 p.m. at the field adjacent to Laurel Highlands High, and Brownsville is at Fayette City at 5 p.m.
