Uniontown native
Ted Nypaver inducted into Huntingdon County Hall of Fame A Uniontown native who has had a long and successful career coaching high school football is now in the Huntingdon County Sports Hall of Fame.
Ted Nypaver, who now lives in Royersford, was inducted into the Huntingdon County Hall with its class of 2002, during ceremonies held earlier this month in Huntingdon.
Nypaver grew up in Uniontown and graduated from South Union High School, where he played football and basketball and ran track. He earned All-Fayette County honors in football and was a WPIAL honorable mention.
He then attended Northeast Louisiana State from 1955-57, playing end and guard in football and throwing the discus and javelin in track. He transferred to Salem College (W.Va.) and received his bachelor’s degree in education. He then earned a master’s degree in education at West Virginia University and a degree in administration from Shippensburg University of Pa.
Nypaver started coaching football as an assistant to the late Stan McLaughlin, at Dunbar Twp. High, where he also coached track. He later coached at Mount Pleasant, Beth-Center and Blairsville. His teams won county football and basketball championships at the latter school, before he started a 17-year tenure at Southern Huntingdon High, where he turned the school into a state football power.
After a 5-5 start in 1967, his SHHS teams went on to earn a 124-31-6 record, including 65-12-2 at home, and an undefeated streak of 26-0-2 in 1978-81 – at that time the longest unbeaten run in the entire state. His teams posted five unbeaten seasons in 1968-74-77-79 and 80, and three others had only one loss. His only losing season was 1972 (3-7) with a sophomore-dominated team that was unbeaten two years later.
He left Southern after the 1983-84 school year to coach at Spring-Ford High in Royersford, suburban Philadelphia, where his teams won league championships in 1986 and 1987. From 1985 to 1996, teams he was associated with, either as head coach or assistant, compiled a 94-17-1 record.
Nypaver and his wife Loretta live in Royersford. They are the parents of three children, Annette, Ted Jr. and Darrell.
