Tigers hold off Pirates
DETROIT (AP) – Jeff Weaver pitched 7 2-3 sharp innings Saturday night to help the Detroit Tigers end a four-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Tigers won for just the second time in 10 games, while Pittsburgh lost for the 11th time in 15. The Pirates are just 2-9 in interleague play this season.
Weaver (6-8) allowed one run on seven hits, walked one and hit a batter. He struck out four.
Juan Acevedo got the final out in the eighth, and pitched an eventful ninth, striking out Jack Wilson with the bases loaded for his 12th save.
Joe Beimel (1-2) allowed one unearned run and eight hits in six innings, his longest outing in four starts this season. He walked one and struck out three.
Detroit broke a scoreless tie in the fourth. Robert Fick led off with a double and took third on a groundout. Wendell Magee grounded to third baseman Aramis Ramirez, and the throw home beat Fick, but his slide knocked the ball and the glove off of catcher Jason Kendall’s hand. Kendall was charged with an error.
The Tigers made it 2-0 with a two-out rally against Mike Lincoln in the seventh. Damion Easley singled, took third on Craig Paquette’s double and scored on a passed ball by Kendall.
Pittsburgh got a runner to second in the first inning, but didn’t put another player in scoring position until Wilson and Brian Giles had back-to-back singles with two outs in the eighth.
Ramirez followed with an RBI single up the middle, ending Weaver’s night.
NOTES: Weaver picked off Ramirez in the fourth inning. In 17 starts this season, Weaver has only allowed one stolen base.
