Roaring Knob opens Saturday

2 min read

Forty-four race teams braved threatening weather for Roaring Knob Raceway’s recent “shake down, tune up” day. Drivers and their crews were attempting to dial ’em in for the 3/8-mile mountain top oval. All are anticipating a run for the coveted track championships.

Saturday, the quest for those titles begins.

Roaring Knob Raceway will present the 2002 season opener with a big five division racing program.

On the card will be the ground pounding Fayette Tire Late Models, the Caney Valley Sport and Marine Hot Stocks, the VitaLink-QCOL Classic Lites and the Fort Necessity Garage Modified and Stock Four Bangers.

Champs for the 2001 season were Jeff Ferguson in the Late Models, John Redshaw in the Hot Stocks, Mike Hay in the Classic Lites, with Jason Boncoski and Danny Leonard in the Modified and Stock Four Cylinders, respectively.

All are expected back to defend their crowns.

The Best Appearing Car awards will be presented. Fans will choose the winners by voting for their favorites.

Sign-up will be held for the Appalachian Timber Products Junior Pit Crew. Club dues entitle youngsters 12 and under to a membership kit and access to all kinds of fun, games and prizes. This week’s activity is a sack race.

Roaring Knob Raceway Park is located two miles west of the Youghiogheny Lake, just off Route 40 on Fearer Road. The gates open at 5 p.m., warm ups go trackside at 7 p.m., and racing action begins at 7:30 p.m.

General admission is $10.
