Redstone Pony League to resume play
REPUBLIC – Five Pony League teams debut Sunday in the reorganized Redstone Pony League at Redstone Park. “It’s been almost 20 years since the Redstone Pony League was in operation,” said Mel Apicella, league organizer and president. “There was definitely a need here for the league to start up again.”
According to Apicella, in the past, local 13- and 14-year-old boys played their games comprised of one team that made up the Luzerne Pony Division of the Vesta Pony League.
“These games were played out of the area. You had to travel to Vestaburg or Cokeburg just to play a game,” said Apicella. “Traveling was rough. With the economy in our area, many parents couldn’t afford to have their children travel to each game. Some years, a coach couldn’t get enough players to fill a team.”
Also instrumental in reforming the league were league vice president Chico Barber, Mike Novotney, secretary and treasurer, and A.J. Novotny, player agent.
“When we formed this league, we wanted to centralize it to not only cut back traveling, but to give these kids something to do and to keep them out of trouble,” said Apicella. “Some of these kids that are playing in the league haven’t played ball since T-ball, little league, or at all.”
Apicella added that the league couldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for the generosity of the Redstone Township Supervisors.
“They allowed us the use the old Republic Softball League field for these games to take place,” Apicella said.
“They’re in the process of upgrading it and getting it game ready. We’re very appreciative of them. They’re even redoing the concession stands.”
Township Supervisor Ralph Rice said that the township is always looking out for its youth and thought that this would be a very beneficial way of giving back to the community.
“The township is seeking additional funding to install a walking area, sandlots, and more,” Rice said.
The 16-game season will feature teams from Allison, Colonial, Filbert, Miller’s Farm (Dunlap) and Redstone. Games will be played Monday through Friday, beginning at 6 p.m.
