Baseball Kupets out as Gator coach

Geibel Catholic High School will be in the market for a new baseball coach, after present coach Dan Kupets was fired by the school board.

Or in the vernacular of boards, his “position was declared open.”

Kupets, who coached 14 years at Geibel and took his team to the WPIAL playoffs four times, including the past season, was advised of the decision Wednesday. His Gator teams also went to the playoffs in 1989, 1990, and 1993, the latter two years as section champions.

Kupets said the decision to fire him “didn’t come as a surprise. But I will still miss coaching. I enjoyed every second of coaching at Geibel, even though we didn’t win every game, and I hope to get back into coaching somewhere. Whoever comes into the position will have five starters coming back from this year’s team.”

The long-time coach said he would not reapply for the Geibel position. Meanwhile, he will continue as manager of the Brownsville team in the Fayette County Baseball League, and as he put it, “still enjoying playing and being around baseball.”

Curry & White camp set

It might be the baseball season, but in some corners the thoughts are already on the future football programs.

The annual Curry & White Quarterback Skills Camp will be held Saturday, June 1, at Valley High School, New Kensington, for boys from ninth grade through graduating age. Cost is $45 and includes lunch, refreshments, an instructional packet, and a T-shirt.

Camp officials said that advance registration is encouraged. Campers will report to the field between 8 and 8:30 a.m. for check-in and hand stamping, with instructions beginning at 8:45 a.m. and continuing through 4 p.m. Campers should wear shorts, T-shirts, and cleats, and must bring their own football.

Camp directors are coaches George Curry and Ray White. Berwick High coach Curry is the state’s winningest football coach (354-71-5), including consecutive state championships from 1994 to 1997. Other scholastic and collegiate coaches will be staffers for the camp.

For other information contact Curry (570-759-6400 ex. 3108, or 570-759-6432) or White (724-337-1119 or 724-335-9389).
