Indiana, Pa. 34, Slippery Rock 28: SLIPPERY ROCK – Brian Eyerman threw three touchdowns and ran for another as Indiana University of Pennsylvania beat Slippery Rock in overtime to capture the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West division title and an NCAA Division II playoff berth.
The win gives Indiana (10-1, 6-0 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-West), which entered the game No. 7 in the coaches’ Division II rankings, its 12th trip to the Division II playoffs in 15 years and spoils Slippery Rock’s (6-3, 3-1) hopes of sneaking into the playoffs with three losses.
A melee erupted after the game when Indiana players rushed ROTC members guarding a ceremonial rock at the end of one end zone dedicated to former coach Bob DiSpirito. Slippery Rock stationed the cadets around the rock to prevent Indiana players from scaling it like they did when Indiana beat Slippery Rock 27-20 in overtime in the Division II playoffs in 1999.
The cadets and some Indiana players began fighting and the fight soon involved both teams and some cheerleaders. The coaches and campus police broke up the fight after about 15 minutes. Two Indiana players were briefly detained and no one was charged.
Eyerman, who entered the game with the highest quarterback rating in Division II, led the Indians on a four-quarter rally with a touchdown pass to LeRon McCoy and a 1-yard run to send the game into overtime.
Slippery Rock blocked a 27-yard field goal attempt by Josh Telenko at the end of regulation and got the ball in overtime but John Katsaouni missed a 34-yard attempt wide left.
Elice Parker, who caught two touchdowns from Eyerman, had a 2-yard run to end the game.
Eyerman finished with 274 yards on 20-of-27 passing with two interceptions. Parker finished with 49 yards on 14 carries and 49 yards on two passes.
Markus Brandon rushed 27 times for 106 yards and two touchdowns, both in the second quarter as Slippery Rock built a 17-7 halftime lead. Katsaouni kicked a 24-yard field goal on the Rockets first drive.
Parker had a 19-yard TD catch in the third quarter and Katsaouni kicked a 25-yard field goal to give Slippery Rock a 20-14 lead head into the fourth.
Eyerman hit LeRon McCoy on a 4-yard pass to give the Indians a one-point lead with 14:42 to play.
But four minutes later Jeff Valentino, who had 128 yards on 5-of-13 passing, hit Tim McArthurs on a 34-yard pass.
