Cal is crushed by Shippensburg; Waynesburg beaten by Westminster CALIFORNIA, Pa. (AP) – John Kuhn rushed for 230 yards and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference record six touchdowns as Shippensburg beat California 40-7 on Saturday afternoon.

Kuhn’s six-touchdown day also tied the conference record for touchdowns in a game as Shippensburg (6-5, 4-2 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-West) tied for second place in the division with Slippery Rock, a 21-14 winner over Clarion.

Shippensburg held California (6-5, 1-5) to 11 first downs and 177 yards, while gaining 430 yards on offense.

R.J. Ambercrombie returned the opening kickoff 70 yards for California, setting up Brandon LeDonne’s 6-yard touchdown pass to Garvin Graves, but after that it was all Kuhn.

LeDonne had 106 yards on 11-of-32 passing and was the Vulcans’ leading rusher with 29 yards on 13 carries.

Tyler Novak completed 7 of 21 passes for 78 yards for Shippensburg.

Welsey Cates, who graduated from California last year, had owned the previous PSAC rushing touchdown record with five, last set in a 68-12 win over Cheyney on Nov. 10, 2001.

Westminster, Pa. 33, Waynesburg 29: NEW WILMINGTON – Scott Froelich ran for two touchdowns and caught a third, and younger brother, Tom, had a game-saving interception as Westminster, Pa. beat Waynesburg.

Westminster (6-4, 4-1 Presidents’ Athletic Conference) trailed 16-0 early and 29-21 entering the final quarter before Scott Froelich scored on touchdown runs of 1 and 12 yards to give Westminster a 33-29 lead with 3:43 left in the game.

Waynesburg (5-4, 2-3) drove to the Westminster 9-yard line on its next possession before Tom Froelich intercepted a Jeff Dumm pass with under two minutes left. Westminster then ran out the clock.

Scott Froelich finished with 108 yards on 28 carries. His 57-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter cut the Waynesburg lead to 16-7 and was the first of three scoring strikes by Kevin Huber, who finished with 344 yards passing.

Brian Ekis caught 9 balls for 135 yards, including Huber’s other two TDs.

Dumm threw for 383 yards and two touchdowns on a 32-for-57 performance, but also had two interceptions. Paul D’Imperio had game high totals of 11 catches and 148 yards, including a touchdown.

Dumm got little help on the ground as Waynesburg was held to 50 yards rushing.

Washington & Jefferson 7, Buffalo St. 3: BUFFALO, N.Y. – Brian Dawson scored on a 9-yard run as Washington & Jefferson defeated Buffalo State .

After forcing the Bengals (1-9) to punt on its opening drive, the Presidents (8-2) drove 46 yards on nine plays, capped off by Dawson’s score to lead 7-0.

After a scoreless second quarter, Buffalo State got on the board when Eric Buchanan hit a career-long 36-yard field goal with 3:33 left in the third quarter to cut the deficit 7-3.

The Bengals took over their own 12-yard line with 44 seconds left in the game but Frank Pilato intercepted a Buffalo State pass with 11 seconds left.

Joey Nichols led the Presidents’ offense with 80 yards on 32 carries. Dawson went 10 for 20 for 82 yards and two interceptions.

Curtis Hathcock led the Bengals with 86 yards on 17 carries.

Hillsdale 56, Mercyhurst 7: ERIE – Bill Skelton threw three touchdowns and rushed for another, all in the first half, as Hillsdale beat Mercyhurst.

Skelton threw for 211 yards on 17-of-27 passing and rushed for 57 yards on six carries for Hillsdale (4-7, 4-6 Great Lakes Athletic Conference). Kevin Clive rushed for 129 yards and one touchdown on 25 carries and caught a 19-yard touchdown pass.

Edinboro 37, Lock Haven 14: EDINBORO – Alonzo Roebuck ran for 131 yards and two touchdowns, and Geoff Heyl added three field goals as Edinboro beat Lock Haven.

Edinboro (5-6, 2-4 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-West) held Lock Haven to 8 yards rushing on 22 carries, while rolling up 270 yards of its own. Brandon Munson also had 110 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries for the Fighting Scots.

Slippery Rock 21, Clarion 14: CLARION – Slippery Rock scored on its first three possessions and held on despite being held to negative yardage in the second half to beat Clarion .

Slippery Rock (7-4, 4-2 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-West) overcame converting only one third down and minus 18 yards rushing as the Rockets tied for second place in the division with Shippensburg, a 40-7 winner over California, Pa.

St. Francis 14, Robert Morris 7, OT: LORETTO – Michael Hall ran for 150 yards on 34 carries, including a 2-yard touchdown in overtime, as St. Francis, Pa. beat Robert Morris.

Duquesne 27, Fairfield 0: PITTSBURGH (AP) – Niel Loebig threw for three touchdowns and Mike Hilliard ran for 173 yards and another score as Duquesne beat Fairfield.

Duquesne (11-0, 8-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) entered the game ranked No. 25 in the ESPN/USA Today NCAA Division I-AA poll. The Dukes are only the second Division I-AA Mid-Major team ever to be ranked in the top tier Division I-AA poll.

Duquesne entered the game certain of playing in the ECAC Bowl on Nov. 23, but despite an undefeated season was not expected to jump high enough in the polls to earn the first-ever NCAA Division I-AA playoff berth.

Rochester 39, Carnegie Mellon 35: PITTSBURGH – Brian Ferris caught three touchdown passes, including two in a 25-point fourth quarter, as Rochester came back to beat Carnegie Mellon.

The loss broke Carnegie Mellon’s (5-5, 1-3 University Athletic Association) string of 27 consecutive winning seasons. The streak began in 1975 when Coach Rich Lackner was then a freshman linebacker. As head coach since 1986, Lackner’s record is 121-46-2.

Rochester (2-8, 1-3) trailed 28-14 heading into the fourth quarter before getting touchdown passes of 24 and 7 yards from Pat Manuel to Ferris, a 1-yard touchdown run by Gerald Hopkins and a Chris Johnston field goal.

Adam Urbanczyk, who finished with 123 yards on 21 carries, scored his third touchdown on a 7-yard run to give Carnegie Mellon a 35-32 lead with 2:43 left.

But Ferris’ 7-yard score from Manuel capped a 12-play, 80-yard drive to give Rochester a 39-35 lead with 1:10 left. Ferris finished with 11 catches for 165 yards.

Geneva 20, Urbana 14: URBANA, Ohio – Ben Swallow threw two touchdown passes – including a 66-yarder to Marko Thomas – as Geneva beat Urbana .

Swallow, who completed 13-of-30 passes for 221 yards with one interception, needed just two plays to take the Golden Tornadoes 67 yards for the go-ahead touchdown late in the third quarter.
