California University women win Holiday Classic California University’s women’s basketball team defeated Bentley College 68-67 Saturday in the championship game of the California Holiday Classic.
Four California players scored in double figures as the team defeated St. Vincent College 80-46 Friday to pick up its first win of the season.
Sara McKinney scored 19 points, Becky Siembak had 15 and Sameera Philyaw and Megan Storck added 12 and 10, respectively.
McKinney went 8-13 from the field, 3-for-5 from the foul line and grabbed 9 rebounds while Siembak went 7-for-10 from the field, one of one from the foul line and pulled down 11 rebounds.
Connellsville graduate Morgan Foley and Geibel Catholic graduate Erica Hogan scored seven points apiece for St. Vincent.
Foley shot 2-for-8 from the field, pulled down four rebounds and had three steals. Hogan shot 2-for-9 from the field, 2-for-2 from the foul line and had two steals.
All-tournament team member McKinney led all scorers with 18 points and shot a perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line and had seven rebounds.
Teammate and tournament MVP Siembak had 17 points and Philyaw added 10.
Ashland University 66, St. Vincent College 49 – Connellsville’s Morgan Foley scored 12 points, but the Lady Bearcats fell to Ashland University at California University on Saturday.
Foley shot 4-for-9 from the field, a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line and pulled down 12 rebounds. Teammate Erica Hogan grabbed five rebounds had five steals and had one point.
St. Vincent will hosts Slippery Rock at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Pittsburgh 90, Robert Morris 51 – Laurel Highlands graduate Candice John scored a game-high 19 points for Robert Morris as the Lady Colonials were defeated by Pittsburgh on Friday.
John went 7-foro-12 from the field, 3-for-4 from the three-point stripe and 2-for-2 from the foul line. She also pulled down four rebounds and had one steal.
Robert Morris travels to Maryland-Eastern Shore for a noon tip-off Wednesday.
Waynesburg 50, Thiel 43; Allegheny 79, Waynesburg 54 – Waynesburg College finished third in the National City Bank Tournament held at Allegheny College over the weekend.
In the consolation game Saturday night, Waynesburg defeated Thiel.
Candice Eyerman scored a game-high 18 points and had four steals. Rachel Dillon added 12 points, and Kyana Bradley pulled down 15 rebounds.
In Friday night’s game against Waynesburg, Eyerman had 16 points and seven rebounds, and Bradley had eight points and nine rebounds.
The Yellow Jackets play LaRoche Monday in non-conference action.
Women’s swimming
California University 70, Edinboro 35; California University 58, West Virginia Wesleyan 37 – The California University women’s swim team increased its season record to 6-0 Saturday as it hosted Edinboro University and West Virginia Wesleyan.
The Vulcans defeated Edinboro 70-35 and West Virginia Wesleyan, 58-37.
California freshman Amanda Kuiper won two events including the 1,000-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle, and freshman Sandra Buehler also won two events – the 200 and 400-yard freestyle.
California’s next meet will be at Grove City College Invitational the weekend of Dec. 6-7.
The Edinboro men and the West Virginia Wesleyan men also competed at the meet with the Bobcats defeating the Fighting Scots, 64-31.
