Capitals beat Penguins, 3-1
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (AP) – Jaromir Jagr and Chris Simon scored in the third period and the Washington Capitals beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-1 in an NHL exhibition game Wednesday night. Simon scored the game-winner 8:25 into the final period when he tipped in a shot from the point by J.F. Fortin.
Three minutes earlier, the Penguins tied it 1-1 on the power play when Jagr backhanded a shot over goalie Johan Hedberg.
Sergei Gonchar added a power-play goal for Washington (2-3-0) with less than five minutes left. Glen Metropolit and Kip Miller each had two assists for the Capitals.
Kent Manderville gave Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead in the first period when he intercepted a clearing attempt in the high slot and beat Capitals goalie Olaf Kolzig.
It was the last exhibition game for the Penguins (2-4-1).
Mario Lemieux, who missed all but 24 games last season with a hip injury, skipped all seven preseason games.
He is scheduled to play in an intrasquad scrimmage Saturday night at Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh.
