Garfield character helps promote bowling to youths

By Gary George 4 min read

It wasn’t too long ago that Garfield of comic strip fame made his way into the sport of bowling. The YABA (Young American Bowling Alliance) signed a long-term deal to use Garfield to help promote the sport. Shirts, balls, bags, and towels have begun to show up. Of course anything that helps generate interest in bowling just tickles me plum to death, and obviously Garfield is a strong attraction for the young bowlers.

Leagues related to NASCAR, Nintendo, and Playstation wherein the young bowlers are given the opportunity to roll weekly and then have a chance to win a NASCAR jacket or Nintendo/Playstation Game console have been extremely popular. So, Garfield just fits right in there.

In Garfield’s case, maybe there has been a little bit of a crossover. I noticed the other day in a catalog there was some Garfield items and believe it or not there was a “Bowling and Golf Playset” available. It was designed for the really young ones in the family (ages 3 and up). The bowling set included two bowling balls (one red-one blue) and ten pins (8 inches tall) imprinted with Garfield’s face. The golf set had three clubs, three balls, a practice hole, a golf flag and a golf bag (16 inches tall) with a nylon carrying strap.

Of course, all the pieces were plastic, but there they were golf, bowling, and Garfield-all together for the first time.

The cost of the set was only $15.95.

It should be a great Christmas gift.

Where’s SpongeBob?

Okay, I admit that Garfield is funny, but I think Ziggy is even funnier.

Yet no one anywhere in the world today says it better or gets it done sharper than SpongeBob. At the moment, he is the hero of the ages.

So right now would be the perfect time for a new SpongeBob bowling ball, and I mean a real bowling ball that you can throw down the lane.

Then we could follow up with shirts, towels, and bags.

I’d be willing to bet that you could sell a tip board to win a SpongeBob bowling ball during your league and it would be only a matter of minutes before all the tips would be gone. Garfield or Mickey Mouse would have some appeal, but raffle off a SpongeBob ball and you’d have men, women and children of all ages standing in line.

He’s the hottest ticket available.

Ho hum

I’m happy to report that Alan Scabis won (ho hum) our first Championship Bowling TV tournament this past Sunday at Manor Lanes. That would make his 85th or 86th or something like that. I’ve lost count (but I know he hasn’t).

Actually, I’m just poking fun at Alan because he is such a tremendous competitor that it seems like whenever he puts himself into the position where he can win a TV show, he does.

Seriously-he is very, very tough to beat on the lanes.

Yawn

Our buddy, Justin Makil, went on a tear last Monday and rolled another 300 perfect game at Manor Lanes (yawn).

That makes something like three sanctioned 300 games in the last year and a half (or month and a half, or week and a half, or something).

He’s rolled so many 800 series and 300 games over the past two season that he should just melt down the rings into silver and gold bars, sell the stones, buy a yacht, and take his fiancee, Erica, on a cruise around the world.

Gudac qualifiers

Don’t forget that Gudac Lanes is having qualifiers today at 1 p.m., and then next week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 10 p.m..

Remember also, there are no guaranteed spots available for this TV show (at Joe’s request), so you can come anytime-roll your best-and the top ten scores will make the TV board.

After Gudac’s, we move down to the Mt. Vernon with hosts Lenny Beveloque and Bob Cipolletti.

I’ll see you on the lanes.
