Brownsville girls snap 12-year tennis drought vs. GCC It took Brownsville girls tennis team 12 years and 24 tries, but they finally defeated section 1-AA rival Greensburg Central Catholic, 3-2.

“It took 12 years, but we finally did it,” said Brownsville coach Dan Lonigro. “Lately, it’s been a ‘never say die’ attitude for us.”

Gina Pelehac defeated Katie Schevchik 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles match.

Brownsville won both doubles matches with the team of Danielle Davison and Christina Libertini defeated Sarah Anderson and Molly Spore (7-5, 6-3) and Shantel Curcio and Maggie Craig overcame seven match points to defeat Anna Polsinelli and Ashley Caruso (6-4, 2-6, 7-5).

If Brownsville wins its matches next week against Derry and Belle Vernon, it will be the first time in the history of the program that they’ll be named section champions.

Greensburg Central must win both of its matches next week to share that section title.

Latrobe 4, Connellsville 1 – Latrobe handed Connellsville only their second loss this season with a road win over the Lady Falcons.

Beth Conlon and Kristina Grove won the only match for Connellsville with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Sam Weihl and Brittany Ruffner.

“It was disappointing, but they were very solid in singles,” said Connellsville coach Don Campbell. “They are an excellent team.”

The doubles team of Grove and Conlon will participate in the WPIAL playoffs on Monday at North Park.

Girls soccer

Geibel Catholic 3, Connellsville 0 – Kaitlyn Fagan scored two goals and had one assist as Geibel Catholic blanked Connellsville in girls soccer. Megan Sopko also scored for the Lady Gators.

Geibel goalkeeper Emily Pennington had seven saves and Connellsville goalkeeper Kelly Juengel had 13 saves.

Geibel (5-6, 7-8) will host Beth-Center on Monday at 4 p.m.

Connellsville remains winless at 0-14.

Allderdice 6, Waynesburg Central 4 – Shea Zwerver and Kaitlyn Scott both scored twice for Waynesburg, but Allderdice outlasted the Lady Raiders in non-section action.

Stacey Kern scored three goals for the Lady Dragons.

Helen Higgins had 9 saves for Waynesburg Central.

Men’s football

Slippery Rock 41, California University of PA 16 – Brandon Marcus led with two touchdowns as Slippery Rock won their 13th straight game against California.

The Rock got on the scoreboard first on a 12-yard pass from Jeff Valentino to Tim Arthurs.

Valentino threw three touchdowns and 149 yards.

California’s only score of the first half came at the 7:51 mark in the second quarter on a 23-yard field goal from Gary Amos.

Quarterback Dustin Strayer and Dedric Anderson hooked up on two touchdown passes (67 and 10 yards) in the second half for California (4-1, 0-1).

Strayer threw 13-18 and 225 total yards. Anderson had five catches for 134 yards. Teammate Garvin Graves had nine catches for 137 yards.

The loss is Cal’s first of the season while Slippery Rock moves to 3-2 overall.

Waynesburg 42, Bethany College 21 – Bethany College got on the scoreboard first by taking a quick 14-0 lead, but Waynesburg rallied back and scored six straight touchdowns to pick up the win at home.

Quarterback Jeff Dumm completed 15-19 passes for 205 yards and four touchdown passes. Ivan Hawkins caught two of those passes for scores and added one rushing touchdown. Teammates Greg Shannon had 101 yards rushing and one touchdown and Albert Gallatin graduate Jared Plisko scored on a 3-yard pass from Jeff Dumm at the 11:07 mark in the third quarter.

Waynesburg Central graduate Brandon Doppelhauer had five tackles including a sack for the Yellow Jackets and Frazier graduate Chris Johnson had four tackles.

Brownsville graduate Justin Samol had three tackles for Bethany, Laurel Highlands graduate Nick Lion had five tackles and Uniontown grad Ryan Lieb had one assist.

Men’s baseball

C.C.A.C. South 5, Penn-State Fayette 4, Butler C.C.C. 9, Penn-State Fayette 1 – The Penn-State Fayette baseball team was eliminated from the W.P.C.C. playoffs with loses to C.C.A.C. South and Butlet C.C.C.

In the first game, Penn-State trailed through the first three innings, but rallied back in the fifth inning with three runs.

Tied at four going into the bottom of the seventh inning, C.C.A.C. South scored to send Penn-State Fayette to the losing bracket.

Mike Miskanin had a double and single for PSU and Ryan Gondek had two RBI’s. Jared Early and Jim Ducar also doubled for Penn-State.

In game two, Butler Community College jumped out to the early 5-0 lead through the first three innings and never looked back.

Ryan Stotka, Early and Ducar all had two hits a piece for Penn-State and Stotka drove in two runs.

Penn-State Fayette looks forward to the Western Pennsylvania Community College playoffs next week. PSU finished first among the campuses.

Men’s cross-country

California cross-country team traveled to Waynesburg College on Saturday and ran away with a victory.

The Cal men’s team took first place overall with eight teams competing.

John Kerekes took home first place while teammates Stephen Teeter and Richard Hunter rounded out the top three.

Other Cal runners who placed were Ryan Wilson (6th), Cory Cox (11th), Heath Piper (17th) and Josh Lozecki (21st).

Grove City finished in second place and Notre Dame of Ohio finished third.
