Yellow Jackets ride Dumm’s arm to victory
Jeff Dumm threw two of his game-high four touchdown passes in the third quarter and the Waynesburg College defense held off a late Grove City rally Saturday for a 30-24 Presidents’ Athletic Conference victory on Homecoming. The two teams exchanged first quarter touchdowns and second quarter field goals for a 10-10 halftime tie. The Yellow Jackets (2-1, 4-2) scored on Dumm’s 28-yard touchdown pass to Ivan Hawkins while the Wolverines scored on a 7-yard run by Steve Roberts.
Grove City’s Mike Titzel hit a 19-yard field matched later in the quarter when Brian Cence made a 21-yard attempt for the home team.
Dumm threw his second and third touchdown passes of the game in the latter stages of the third quarter.
He hit Jake Marcoux on a 7-yard pass with 6:35 to go and found Dominick Hunter open for a 14-yard scoring pass.
The Wolverines (1-3, 2-5) cut into the deficit early in the fourth quarter on Mark Byrer’s 25-yard touchdown pass from Todd Smargiasso, but the Yellow Jackets countered on the next drive when Dumm hit Paul D’Imperio on a 51-yard pass for his fourth touchdown of the game.
Grove City scored with less than two minutes left in the game on Bo Danton’s short touchdown pass from Smargiasso.
Waynesburg amassed 451 yards of total offense, largely behind Dumm’s 350 yards passing on 28 completions. D’Imperio caught seven passes for 116 yards while Shannon led the rushing attack with 57 yards.
Albert Gallatin graduate Jared Plisko gained 15 yards on the ground and caught three passes for 31 yards.
