Rohanna loses in 4th hole of sudden death; Craig ninth in girls’ play YORK – Radnor’s Adam Cohan beat first-round leader Robert Rohanna of Waynesburg on the fourth hole of sudden death to win the PIAA Boys’ Golf Championship on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Hempfield Area senior Katie Miller finished 11 strokes ahead of her nearest competitors to win the girls’ title.
Cohan and Rohanna, both juniors, each finished at even-par 142 at Heritage Hills Golf Resort at the end of the second round.
On the fourth playoff hole, the 18th, Rohanna’s tee shot went into a lake.
He made the green with his third shot but was unable to make a 60-foot par putt. Cohan made the green in two and was able to make par for the victory.
Cohan finished tied for fourth at the 2001 championships.
“He had a really good tournament especially yesterday with his round of 68,” said Wayneburg Central coach John Garber. “On the back nine, he battled his driver a little bit, but he kept his composure and kept fighting. It really showed what kind of player he really is.”
“He’s had a great year and has been a team leader for us,” added Garber.
Upper St. Clair senior Mark Cimarolli finished third with a 2-over 144. Butler senior John Aubrey and Benton junior Tyler Brewington tied for fourth.
At nearby Springwood Golf Club, Miller, the 2001 runner-up, finished with a 5-over 149. The 2001 competition runner-up had carried a 5-stroke lead into the second day of competition.
Upper St. Clair junior Katie Trachok and Bethel Park junior Jordyn Wells tied for second at 16-over.
Connellsville junior Jordan Craig finished ninth overall in the Girls Championship with a 42 on the front nine and a 40 on the back. Her total round of 167 was 23 strokes over par.
There were two holes in one during the boys’ championship. Meadville senior Bill Wilkinson aced the 201-yard 15th hole with a 4-iron on Monday. Greater Latrobe sophomore Shane Brant aced the 193-yard 12th hole on Tuesday.
