South Side Beaver hammers California in straight sets

By Pete Riddell For The 2 min read

WASHINGTON – South Side Beaver’s lefty-righty combination of Chelsea Viti and Allyson Clark hammered California into submission Tuesday night, powering the Rams to a straight-set win in the WPIAL Class A nightcap at Wash High’s gym. South Side Beaver won by the scores, 15-7, 15-7 and 15-9. The Rams, Section 3’s runner-up behind defending state champ Farrell, improved to 15-3 on the season and will play Geibel in the second round.

Viti, a senior, wreaked havoc on the game Trojans, pounding out 30 kills – many of them from the back row. Clark, a six-footer, added 24 kills and five blocks. Setter Megan Pistorious set the table, dishing out 48 assists.

California, meanwhile, was led by senior Julie Hill’s six kills.

But it wasn’t so much what the Rams did, but what her team didn’t do, that irked Cal coach Cindy Rohaley most.

“South Side Beaver played well tonight, and my girls play when they feel like it,” said Rohaley, who watched her team’s season end at 14-8.

The match was a study in contrasts, both in style and personality. The Rams played a power game, peppering their play with constant chatter, cheering and encouragement to one another. Their boisterous demeanor was echoed by their loud contingent of fans. Cal, meanwhile, played a scrappy match, salvaging save after save as Viti and Clark reloaded. Never rattled nor intimidated, neither did they display much emotion.

“Unfortunately, we have on and off days, and today was a bad day” said Hill, Cal’s captain and one of four senior starters. “We didn’t play up to our standards.”

South Side nabbed an 11-1 lead en route to its first-set win.

California hung tough in the second set, knotting the score at fives. However, the Rams rallied behind the serve of Kristen Cain, scoring the match’s last six points.

In the third set, the Trojans’ persistence briefly paid dividends. They led, 3-0, and later, 8-4, before SSB coach Robin Blair called time out. After forcing a side out, the Rams rallied, spurred by Pistorious’ run of eight service points.

Fittingly, Viti put an exclamation point on the win, burying a cross-court kill.

“I give (Cal) a lot of credit,” said Blair. “They showed a lot of heart and I have a lot of respect for that.”

Seniors Amy Wohar and Megan Slavic led the Trojans with 22 and 18 assists, respectively.
