Jackets in decisive win; Vulcans smash Cheyney ALFRED, N.Y. – The Waynesburg College football team used a big-play passing attack to roll to a 39-3 win over Alfred University Saturday in non-conferenceaction at Merrill Field.
Sophomore quarterback Jeff Dumm (Charleroi High School) had a stellar performance for the Yellow Jackets. Dumm rushed for touchdowns of 1 and 12 yards, while connecting on three scores from 66, 13 and 62, as he threw for 292 yards in the first half.
Bobby Hogue (Conemaugh Twp.) caught a 66-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter, followed by Dominick Hunter and Ivan Hawkins scores in the second quarter from13 and 62, respectively.
Dumm gave Waynesburg a commanding 33-3 lead in the second half on a 12-yard run, before Brian Cence added two late fieldgoals.
The Waynesburg defense dominated the Alfred (1-3) by limiting the Saxons to just two first downs in the second half. The Jackets were led by Royal Spurlark’s seven tackles and Tommy O’Connor’s 12th career interception.
Waynesburg (2-1) will begin PAC play at 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 5 when it hosts Bethany College at Wiley Stadium.
California 51, Cheyney 7
CHEYNEY – Brandon LeDonne completed 15-of-24 passes for 278 yards and three touchdowns to lead California, Pa., to victory over Cheyney.
All of LeDonne’s TD passes went to Dedric Anderson. LeDonne hit Anderson with a 22-yard scoring pass in the second quarter to give the Vulcans (4-0, 1-0 Pennsylvania State Athletic Confererence) a 14-0 lead.
After California rolled to a 27-0 halftime advantage, LeDonne and Anderson teamed on two more TD passes early in the third quarter – a 23-yarder and a 79-yarder – to put the game away.
Cheyney (0-4, 0-1) averted a shutout on Colin Smith’s 65-yard TD pass to Ed Giddings with 4:55 left in the game. Smith went 17-of-32 for 220 yards. He threw three interceptions.
Wesley Clemons rushed for 112 yards and three touchdowns for California.
Washington & Jefferson 21, Thiel 17
GREENVILLE-Brian Dawson threw three touchdown passes to lead Washington & Jefferson to a comeback victory over Thiel.
Dawson completed 11 of 25 passes for 192 yards and connected with Todd Fry on touchdown passes of 4 and 11 yards in the third quarter.
He also threw a 69-yard touchdown pass to Mike Virgin in the first quarter.
Washington & Jefferson (2-1, 1-0 Presidents’ Athletic Conference), entered the game No. 24 in American Football Coaches Association NCAA Division III rankings.
Duquesne 35, Dayton 28
DAYTON, Ohio – Jeremy Conley caught a touchdown pass with 9 seconds left, giving him a school-record 245 yards on receptions, as Duquesne beat Dayton.
After Dayton (3-1) tied it on Kelly Spiker’s touchdown pass with 2:34 to play, Duquesne (4-0) drove 80 yards behind quarterback Niel Loebig. He completed passes of 11 and 30 yards to Conley, getting in range for a field goal.
On third-and-6 at the Dayton 10-yard line, Loebig faked a handoff and threw to Conley in the far corner of the end zone. Conley’s 245 yards came on nine catches, his longest going 54 yards.
Loebig was 22-of-37 for 411 yards and three touchdowns.
Duquesne dominated the game, rolling up 436 yards while limiting Dayton to 205. Duquesne led 21-7 at halftime, but Dayton tied it when Loebig fumbled and Aaron Furman returned the ball 14 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter.
Loebig’s 26-yard touchdown pass to Loran Cooley put Duquesne ahead, but Kelly’s 22-yard touchdown pass to Sean Borchers tied it again. Kelly was 3-of-13 for 74 yards and was sacked twice.
Johns Hopkins 28, Carnegie Mellon 7
BALTIMORE – George Merrell rushed for a touchdown and threw for another to lift Johns Hopkins to a win over Carnegie Mellon.
The Blue Jays (3-0) took a 14-0 halftime lead as they put together a pair of long scoring drives.
