Beth-Center golf team cruises to win over Frazier
DAWSON – With Greensburg Central Catholic poised to cruise through to another section crown, winning as many matches on the road in Division II, Section 2 is imperative to secure the second playoff berth. Beth-Center took an early season step in the right direction Thursday afternoon at Linden Hall Golf Course with a convincing 211-263 road victory over Frazier. Beth-Center improves to 2-1 in the section and 3-1 overall while the Commodores drop to 0-2 in the section and 0-3 overall.
Matt Rohrer, golfing in the No. 4 slot, had the round of the day for the visiting Bulldogs with an even-par 36. Rohrer spotted Beth-Center a 20-stroke lead after his nine holes, mounting an insurmountable lead after four golfers.
Brandon Boledovic had a steady round at No. 2 for the Bulldogs, carding a 5-over-par 41. Roger Myers had a rough start at the No. 1 spot, recovering to finish with a 46.
Justin Sckena and Aric Ilko both scored 44 to close the scoring rounds. James Shubilla’s 52 was thrown out.
First-year coach Rich Gaster was pleased with his squad’s outing on the road, acknowledging the Bulldogs will need more performances like the one at Linden Hall for a chance at the playoffs.
“Anytime you can take one that’s an away match, that’s a bonus,” Gaster said. “We don’t look at the numbers perspective. I want them to play solid and smart. Do that and the numbers will follow.”
Though it’s still early in the season, Gaster likes the way his team has golfed so far.
“The numbers are coming down. We’re getting comfortable with one another,” said Gaster, who joined the team in the first week of the season after replacing longtime coach Gene Fox.
On the other side of the tee box, Frazier coach Larry Mikesell was a bit bewildered at his team’s performance, especially since it was on the Commodores’ home course.
“I you can’t play at home, where can you play?” Mikesell responded. “We have to keep working. We played better against Charleroi at Mon Valley Country Club.”
On the play of the visitors, Mikesell added, “Beth-Center played solid golf. The kept their scores in a range.”
Craig Miller, golfing at No. 5, was the lone Frazier to break 50 with a 48. Jeff Adams shot a 50, Mike Hatalowich had a 52 and Beau Nicklow finished with a 56. Tom Farrell carded a 57 while Ross English’s 59 was not used.”
