Chandler scores 38 in victory
Jocelyn Chandler lit up the scoreboard with 38 points as Uniontown downed McGuffey, 77-18, in girls’ basketball non-section action Tuesday. Chandler connected on 15 field goals and went 8 for 11 from the foul line. She also pulled down 10 rebounds, added five steals and dished out two assists in the easy victory at home.
Teammate Sara Kovach was the only other player to land double figures with 13 points, including 5 of 6 from the foul line.
The Lady Raiders (2-1) travel to Schenley today.
Waynesburg Central 64, Carmichaels 38 – Cigi Wright led all scorers with 18 points, including 10 of 11 from the free throw stripe as Waynesburg Central picked up an easy non-section victory over host Carmichaels.
Megan Summersgill added 14 in the Lady Raider victory.
Markee Batis had the hot hand for Carmichaels with 14 points.
Waynesburg extends its record to 2-1, while Carmichaels falls to 1-1. The Lady Raiders host Jefferson-Morgan Thursday while the Lady Mikes travel to Beth-Center.
Chartiers-Houston 51, West Greene 44 – The Lady Pioneers lost their season opener at home despite Rachel Phillips’ 27 points. Phillips had seven field goals, a three-pointer and went 10 of 10 from the free throw line.
West Greene trailed by 17 points after three quarters, but made a run in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to single digits.
Boys’ basketball
Uniontown 86, Latrobe 75 – Junior Mays scored a game-high 31 points, including 10 of 11 from the free throw line as the Red Raiders edged past Latrobe in a non-section matchup.
Junior Eric Johnson scored on 12 field goals and was 2 of 3 from the charity stripe for 26 points, while Calvin Brown added 13.
Mays, Brown and Reese Hodge all pulled down five rebounds.
Four Latrobe players scored in double-figures, as Eric Muestler led the way with 23 points. Tony Deftefano scored 16, while Jeff Garcia and Joel Palko added 15 and 11.
The Red Raiders were down by two at the half, but rallied back and outscored Latrobe by six in the third quarter and seven in the fourth for the narrow victory.
Uniontown hosts Monessen Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Connellsville 61, Penn Trafford 45 – James Hairston scored 28 points to help the Falcons build an 18-point halftime lead for a victory in their home opener.
Connellsville (2-0) extended its lead in the third quarter before the Indians were able to cut into its deficit.
Kevin Bell was also in double figures for Connellsville with 11 points.
Matt Cortazzo hit three 3-pointers for Penn Trafford on his way to a team-high 23 points.
Albert Gallatin 58, Norwin 55, OT – Nate Turner led with 18 points as Albert Gallatin eked out an overtime victory over visiting Norwin in a non-section game.
Turner scored on four field goals, went 10 of 11 from the foul line and pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds.
Teammates T.J. Hall and Jared Lint scored 16 and 14 points. Hall grabbed 14 boards, while Lint added 10 rebounds.
Tied at 51 at the end of regulation, AG outscored Norwin in the overtime period 7-4 to pick up its third victory of the season, compared to only one loss.
Phil Beatty led all Norwin scorers with 14 points, while Corey Shrader and Josn Mazzoni added 13 and 10 points.
The Colonials host Belle Vernon on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
North Catholic 70, Brownsville 56 – Zack Kostorick led North Catholic with 26 points, including a game-high five 3-pointers as North Catholic defeated Brownsville in non-section action.
Teammates Chris McKnight and Kal McGuire also scored in double figures with 15 and 11 points.
Brian Gates led Brownsville with 18 points, while Corey Watkins added 14.
The Falcons visit Clairton on Thursday.
Monessen 59, California 55 – Mike Williams led the Greyhounds with 19 points and 11 rebounds as Monessen picked up a non-section road win against California.
Teammate Delroy Ross added 13 points, including 2-of-2 from the foul line.
Dan DeMoss led all scorers for California with 24 points. He also grabbed 13 rebounds and shot 7 of 8 from the foul line.
Bryan Dunn also scored in double-figures with 12 points on five field goals.
Monessen led at the half and held off a third quarter charge by California as the Trojans outscored the Greyhounds 16-9.
Both Monessen and California are now at 1-2. The Trojans host Beth-Center today at 7:30 p.m.
Boys swimming
Laurel Highlands 99, McKeesport 51 – The Mustangs almost came away with a clean sweep in their first match of the season. They won all but two meets as they downed McKeesport in non-section action.
Dustin Stalnaker and Adam Collins led with WPIAL Qualifying times in the 200-freestyle and the 100-backstroke.
Stalnaker won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:54.51 and Collins claimed the top spot in the 100 backstroke with a qualifying time of 57.09. Collins also won the 100-butterfly (59.98).
The team of Collins, Aaron and Chris Hunchuck and Tony Margella also landed a WPIAL Qualifying time of 1:50.45 in the 200-medley relay that kicked off the scoring for the Mustangs.
Margella also claimed the 100-freestyle with a time of 24.60.
Laurel Highlands (1-0) takes on Woodland Hills next week.
Girls’ swimming
Laurel Highlands 86, McKeesport 84 – Keri Smiell won the 200 freestyle (2:10.61) and the 100 butterfly (1:09.82) to lead the Fillies past McKeesport in a non-section meet.
Smiell was also part of the 400 freestyle relay along with Casey Martin, Kara Dinsmore and Theresa Reilly that took home first place with a time of 4:14.01.
Individually, Reilly won the 50-freestyle (27.07), while Dinsmore won the 500-freestyle with a winning time of 6:14.96.
The Fillies (1-0) will meet Woodland Hills next week.
