Colonials knock off Brownsville Craig Hriblan lit up the scoreboard with 13 points, including four 3-pointers as Albert Gallatin defeated host Brownsville in a non-section boys basketball game on Saturday.
“Craig broke our back,” said Brownsville coach Vince Nesser. “We were making a run on and off. We needed to get some back-to-back defensive stops. He would get his space and hit a three.”
Freshman Nate Turner scored 13 points, while Jared Lint and T.J. Hall added 11 and 10 points.
“AG is just a tough team,” Nesser said. “We were going to try and get them off the floor by drawing body contact. We are a perimeter team. We wanted to come down and spread the floor and post Adam Kezmarsky up. We tried to put extra focus on pushing the ball inside. I wanted to take advantage of the freshman inexperience.”
Kevin Garbutt led Brownsville with 15 points, while Scott Fraley added 13.
“Fraley and Garbutt came out and played phenomenal floor games and stealing the basketball,” said Nesser.
Albert Gallatin led 27-24 at the half and Brownsville pulled away in the fourth quarter outscoring the Falcons 21-14.
Brownsville hopes to get back on the winning track as they visit Belle Vernon on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Albert Gallatin is also on the road against Canon-McMillan.
Butler 48, Connellsville 47 – Tyrell Sales led with 22 points as host Butler edged past Connellsville in a non-section contest on Saturday.
Connellsville jumped out to an early 15-10 first-quarter lead, but Butler worked its way back into the game in the second and third quarters and held on in the fourth for the win.
James Hairston led all scorers with 23 points, including two 3-pointers and a 2-of-4 performance from the foul line.
The Falcons return to Section 2-AAAA action on Tuesday against Laurel Highlands at home.
Turkeyfoot Valley 71, Ferndale 62 – Bobby Lager led with 24 points, grabbed a game-high 24 rebounds and added five steals as Turkeyfoot Valley defeated Ferndale in a non-section contest.
Seth Livengood scored 14 points, pulled down 11 rebounds and recorded three steals, while Bill Hinzy also scored in double-figures with 12.
The Rams meet Meyersdale on Monday. It’s the first of three games for Turkeyfoot next week. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
Connellsville 56, Canon-McMillan 26 – James Hairston led with a game-high 22 points and teammate Kevin Bell added 15 as Connellsville cruised to an easy win over Canon-McMillan in Section 2-AAAA action on Friday.
Connellsville led by only four points at the end of the first quarter, but erupted for a 13-7 second quarter and 22-4 third quarter to ice the win.
Larenzo Gregory led the Big Macs with six points.
The Falcons visit Laurel Highlands on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
Mount Pleasant 76, Brownsville 49 – Rob Patula led with a game-high 31 points as Mount Pleasant downed host Brownsville in a Section 3-AAA match-up.
The Vikings held Brownsville to just two first-quarter points and led the entire game.
Teammate Bobby Brooks also scored in double figures with 14.
Kevin Garbutt led Mount Pleasant with 17 points.
The Falcons are back in action on Tuesday night against Belle Vernon on the road.
Uniontown 72, Southmoreland 35 – Junior Mays almost single-handedly outscored the entire Scotty team with 34 points as Uniontown defeated host Southmoreland in a Section 3-AAA game Friday.
Eric Johnson added 14 points for the Red Raiders.
Uniontown led Southmoreland 52-26 at the half.
Chase Richardson led the Scotties with seven points.
Uniontown hosts Derry on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
Yough 81, Belle Vernon 63 – Yough’s Ben McCauley and Cody Smouse combined for 45 points as Yough downed Belle Vernon in a Section 3-AAA contest.
McCauley scored 24 points and Smouse scored 21. Adam Portik added 16 points.
Matt Rowland led all scorers with 32 points for Belle Vernon while Jared Podroskey added 11.
The Leopards are back in action on Monday at home against Elizabeth-Forward.
California 61, Jefferson-Morgan 58 – Andy Galis led California with 21 points, while Dan DeMoss and Woody Stewart added 16 and 12 points as the Trojans slid past Jefferson-Morgan in a Section 2-A match-up on Friday.
Jimmy Basilone led the Rockets with 17 points and Matt Ferencak added 13.
The Trojans led 19-10 at the end of the first quarter and were outscored in the second and fourth quarters.
California hosts Carmichaels on Tuesday, while Jefferson-Morgan visits Mapletown on Dec. 19.
Geibel Catholic 62, Avella 36 – The Gators jumped out to an early 13-7 first-quarter lead and watched it increase throughout the game as they defeated Avella in a Section 2-A contest.
Kellen Holmes scored a game-high 22 points and Rob Ramsey added 17 for Geibel.
Holmes also pulled down 11 rebounds and Ramsey added 4 assists.
Avella’s Fred Simons led with 13 points and Drew Klem added 11.
The Gators (3-3, 1-0) have two section games coming up next week with West Greene at home on Tuesday and at Jefferson-Morgan on Friday.
Mapletown 69, Carmichaels 52 – Andy Erjavek led all scorers with 22 points as Mapletown defeated Carmichaels in Section 2-A action.
Also in double figures for the Maples were Gerod Buckhalter with 17, Justin Corso with 14 and Kevin Mackanich with 10.
Jared Lapkowicz led the Mikes with 17 points and Jamie Kowalczyk added 15.
Mapletown visits Avella on Tuesday, while Carmichaels visits California. Tip-off times for both games are 7:30 p.m.
Bentworth 57, Frazier 52 – Deadlocked through regulation, Bentworth outscored Frazier 7-2 in the second overtime for a non-section win at home.
Lloyd Williamson led Bentworth with 22 points, Ryan O’Donnell scored 16 and Matt Lammey added 10.
Leading the Commodores were Steve Erdely with 20 points and Ryan Keebler added 13.
Frazier returns to Section 3-A action on Tuesday against Cornell at 7:30 p.m.
Girls’ basketball
Penn-Trafford 54, Connellsville 35 – Autumn Hines scored 18 points en route to an easy non-section win over host Connellsville.
Teammates Mary Bair scored 11 points, including one 3-pointer and a perfect 2-of-2 performance from the foul line and Kristine Kudrick added 10.
Ashley Benzio was the only Lady Falcon in double-figures with 10 points.
Penn Trafford remains undefeated at 7-0, while Connellsville falls to 2-5 overall.
Connellsville hosts Laurel Highlands on Monday.
Waynesburg Central 62, Derry 57 – Cigi Wright and Autumn Minor each scored eight points in the fourth period as Waynesburg Central roared from behind to defeat host Derry in a Section 3-AAA battle.
The Lady Trojans led 16-13, 30-22 and 47-40 at the breaks, but the Lady Raiders stormed into the lead in the final frame and pulled away for the win by hitting 12 of 16 free throws down the stretch.
Erica Keller tied for game-high honors with 18 points for Waynesburg (6-1, 2-0). Wright followed with 15 and Minor contributed 14 along with 11 rebounds. Megan Summersgill chipped in with eight.
Kelly Nikely led Derry (4-3, 1-1) with four 3-pointers and 18 points. Cassie Hauser tallied 13 points and Tammy Eldridge had 10.
The Lady Raiders host Mount Pleasant on Monday.
Bentworth 36, California 22 – Bentworth out-scored host California 12-2 in the third period to pull away for a Section 2-A victory.
Jessica Cramer and Laura Shaffer paced the Lady Bearcats with nine and eight points, respectively.
Cara Wentzell scored a game-high 10 points for the Lady Trojans (1-3, 0-2) and also had four steals and four rebounds. Ashley Martinak followed with six points, and Kate Bennett pulled down nine rebounds.
Bentworth led 12-7 after one period and 18-15 at the half before running off to a 30-17 advantage in the third period.
California is home again on Monday when it hosts Carmichaels.
Uniontown 73, Albert Gallatin 56 – Jocelyn Chandler erupted for 42 to lead Uniontown to a Section 2-AAAA victory.
The Lady Red Raiders (5-2, 2-0) utilized a 25-point second quarter to put the game away.
Teammates Jill Monahan and Sara Kovach each fired in 10 points.
Mallory Adamovich led the Lady Colonials with 23 points.
Uniontown begins a two-game home stand against Ringgold on Monday and Trinity on Thursday, while Albert Gallatin visits Canon-McMillan on Monday and Connellsville on Thursday.
Bentworth 36, California 22 – Jessica Kramer led with nine points as Bentworth defeated California in a non-section game on Friday.
Cara Wentzell led the Lady Trojans with 10 points.
California returns to section action on Monday against Carmichaels at home.
Monessen 71, Frazier 13 – Monessen led 44-9 at the half and continued to roll as they defeated host Frazier in a non-section match-up on Friday.
Nychole Whitlock and Charisse Bassett each outscored the Lady Commodores team as they each poured in 14 points. Teammates Charel Allen and Perriel Pearson added 12 and 10 points.
Brooke Carson and Amber Smith each had four points for Frazier.
The Lady Commodores begin a two-game home stand against Jefferson-Morgan on Monday and California on Thursday.
Wrestling
Connellsville 65, Uniontown 12 – Connellsville won 12 matches, including three by forfeit as they defeated Uniontown at home on Friday in Section 2-AAA action.
P.J. Holden (103), Jake Kneper (119) and Jason Doppelheuer (171) won their matches by forfeit and Mike Zavada kicked off the scoring for Connellsville with a pin over Jeremy Rice in the 112-pound match in 1:15.
Eric McGinnis pinned Dan Rush in the 125-pound match (:44) and Ashton Primus pinned John Guth in the 130-pound contest (:14).
Also picking up victories for the Falcons were Adam Bucci (135), Josh Martin (140), Nathan Klingensmith (145), Jarrod King (160) and Dan Newlon (215).
Uniontown’s victory came in the 189-pound match where Jeremiah Ditmore won by decision over Jim Tony by the score of 14-13.
Connellsville (3-0) faces Ringgold on Wednesday and Kiski Area on Thursday. Both matches are on the road at 7:30 p.m.
