Albert Gallatin wins thriller over Canon-McMillan Nate Turner’s block shot set up an exciting finish for Albert Gallatin which hit its climax when T.J. Hall followed his own shot for the game-winning field goal at the buzzer to give the visiting Colonials a thrilling 47-45 Section 2-AAAA victory over Canon-McMillan Tuesday night.
Turner blocked Matt Clemons shot to help the Colonials cap an iron-man performance in the fourth quarter after trailing 39-35 after three quarters.
“We were a little short tonight because Zach Voithofer was out with the flu,” Albert Gallatin head coach Dan Andria said. “Canon-McMillan tried to run us down, but we hung in there. It was a total team effort.”
Hall led the Colonials (1-1, 6-4) with 19 points. Turner was also in double figures with 12.
Mike Lipinski was the leading scorer for Canon-McMillan (0-2, 4-3) with 13 points.
Belle Vernon 71, Brownsville 61 – The Leopards scored 17 points in the first quarter and had 18 points in each of the final three quarters to outlast the visiting Falcons in Section 3-AAA action.
Matt Rowland had a game-high 28 points Belle Vernon (1-2, 3-6) with Mike Davis adding 21 and Chris Trenk scoring 12.
Scott Fraley was the top scorer for Brownsville (0-3, 0-8) with 16 points. Corey Watkins had 15 and Kevin Garbutt chipped in 13.
Waynesburg Central 64, Mount Pleasant 60 – The Raiders finished strong, outscoring the Vikings 24-12 in the fourth quarter to win a Section 3-AAA road game. Waynesburg (6-1) remains atop the section standings with a 3-0 mark. Mount Pleasant drops to 1-2 in section and 2-5 overall.
Nate Stoner led the way for the Raiders with 23 points. Billy Becker scored 14 and Anthony Bocchini added 10.
Bobby Brooks was Mount Pleasant’s top scorer with 20. Rob Patula was also in double figures with 18.
Geibel Catholic 77, West Greene 52 – Kellen Holmes recorded a double-double with a game-high 24 points and 10 rebounds as Geibel Catholic rolled past visiting West Greene in a Section 2-A game.
Coach Ken Misiak’s Gators (4-3, 2-0) led 19-17 after one period before charging to a 36-23 halftime advantage.
The Pioneers sliced three points off the lead in the third period to trail 54-44 heading into the final frame, but the Gators pulled away from there to win by 25.
Will Bronson and Jacob Shetler followed Holmes in the scoring column for Geibel with 14 points apiece. Bronson also had four steals. Rob Ramsey tallied 12 points, and Earl Gilbert handed out six assists to go along with seven points.
Cody Hildreth hit five of West Greene’s six 3-pointers on his way to a 17-point night. R.J. Martin had 12 points and Chris Simms chipped in with 11.
Carmichaels 69, California 59 – Jamie Kowalczyk poured in six 3-pointers to go with six field goals and six free throws for a season-high 36 points in a Section 2-A road game. The Mikes outscored the Trojans, 29-16, to rally from a 43-40 third quarter deficit.
Jared and Jeff Lapkowicz both scored 10 points for the Mikes. Carmichaels (2-1, 3-4) hosts Geibel Catholic Friday night.
Dan DeMoss led California (1-2, 4-5) with 21 points. Woody Stewart scored 18 and Bryan Dunn added 10 for the Trojans.
Conemaugh Township 69, Turkeyfoot Valley 54 – Andy Byer tossed in 21 points and Steve Miller added 11 as Conemaugh Township beat Turkeyfoot in Somerset County League action Tuesday.
Conemaugh jumped out to a 21-9 first-quarter lead, before Turkeyfoot trimmed the margin to nine at the half with an 18-15 scoring edge in the second period.
After a 10-all standoff in the third period, the visitors iced the win with a 23-17 scoring bulge in the final period.
Byer’s game-leading total included four three-pointers.
Bill Hinzy was Turkeyfoot’s leading scorer with 11 points, and Bret Clevenger, who had three treys, and Seth Livengood had 10 apiece.
Bob Lager was the Rams’ top rebounder with 17, while Clevenger pulled in eight and handed out eight assists.
The loss drops the Rams to 2-3.
Girls basketball
West Greene 33, Bentworth 24 – Rachel Phillips scored 13 points to help the Lady Pioneers hold off the Bearcats for a non-section home victory. West Greene held a 23-10 first half lead, but the Lady Bearcats outscored the Lady Pioneers, 14-10, in the final 16 minutes.
Stephanie Wytovich led Bentworth with 12 points.
Boys swimming
Laurel Highlands 99, Belle Vernon 66 – The Mustangs won eight individual events, the diving competition and all three relays to defeat the visiting Leopards for a non-section win.
Dustin Stalnaker (200 freestyle, 100 freestyle), Adam Collins (100 butterfly, 100 backstroke), Jim Tesauro (50 freestyle), Ben Shinsky (500 freestyle) and Aaron Hunchuck (200 breaststroke) all won individual events for the Mustangs. Ben Bonchosky won the diving.
Stalnaker hit WPIAL qualifying times in both wins, as did Collins. The 200 freestyle relay team also hit the qualifying time.
Joey Mossar had Belle Vernon’s lone first place finish with a win in the 200 individual medley.
Girls swimming
Belle Vernon 109, Laurel Highlands 79 – The Fillies won eight events, but the Lady Leopards were too deep with second and third place finishes for a non-section road victory.
Amanda Baker (200 IM), Sarah Naylor (500 freestyle), Julie Lacey (100 backstroke), and Alana Puskavich (200 freestyle) took firsts for Belle Vernon. The 400 freestyle relay team of Puskavich, Naylor, Lacey and Baker won in 4:13.37.
Emily Bota won the diving competition with 140.75 points. Theresa Reilly (50 freestyle), Keri Smiell (100 butterfly), and Erin Perry (100 breaststroke) took firsts for the Fillies. Laurel Highlands won the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays.
