Waynesburg College defeats Penn State-McKeesport The Waynesburg College men’s basketball team had never played Penn State-McKeesport before so the two teams didn’t have any history. The Yellow Jackets started on the right foot Saturday with a 68-63 non-conference road victory.
Penn State-McKeesport (4-5) led 33-32 after the first half, but Waynesburg (3-4) rallied in the second half for the win.
Mike King led the Yellow Jackets with 14 points. Shawn Coleman scored 12 and Jeff Nero added 10. Nero also led the rebounders with eight.
Lydell Walker scored a game-high 23 points for the home team. Anthony Rivers was also an offensive force with 20 points.
California (Pa.) 87, Ohio Valley 57 – The Vulcans remained undefeated with a convincing non-conference road victory over the Fighting Scots. California improves to 10-0 overall, the best start the Vulcan men have had since joining the NCAA in 1985.
Sherman Brittingham had 17 points for California, one of five Vulcans in double figures. Kevin Sherman and Michael Johnson both scored 14, Gerrmar Ballard and Sharif Bray had 13 apiece and Boris Mesnager finished with 10.
The Vulcans travel to the University of District of Columbia Tuesday for a non-conference game.
Girls basketball
Connellsville 64, Geibel Catholic 32 – The Lady Falcons didn’t have many problems with Geibel Saturday night in a game between the to Connellsville programs. Connellsville (4-6) led 16-7 after the first quarter, and then steadily pulled away in the final 24 minutes.
Nicole Stillwagon and Ashley Benzio both scored 12 points for Connellsville.
Natalie Hozak led the Lady Gators (4-4) with nine points. Abbie Renze added eight.
Boys basketball
Laurel Highlands 80, John Marshall, W.Va. 72 – The Mustangs rallied with a strong fourth quarter, outscoring the team from West Virginia, 21-10, Saturday night for a win in the Washington-Greene Hoop Fest played at Trinity High School.
J.T. Stefanik scored 23 points to lead Laurel Highlands (7-1) with Tim Hirsch adding 21. Kenny Riddell was also in double figures with 15.
The Mustangs’ non-section game at Central Catholic scheduled for Monday has been rescheduled for Saturday, Jan. 10.
Linsly, W.Va. 69, Waynesburg Central 61 – The Raiders weren’t able to overcome a 12-point halftime deficit, dropping a game in the Washington-Greene Hoop Fest. Linsly led 37-25 at the half, but Waynesburg chipped one point off in the third quarter and three in the final eight minutes.
Nate Stoner had a double-double with 25 points and 11 rebounds for Raiders (7-2) with Bill Becker adding 13 points.
On Friday, Waynesburg remained atop the Section 3-AAA standings with a 67-40 win at home over Southmoreland. Stoner had another double-double against the Scotties with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Becker scored 14 points for the Raiders.
Matt Odroneic was the only Southmoreland player in double figures with 10. Southmoreland falls to 1-3 in the section and 1-8 overall.
Derry 56, Brownsville 51 – The middle quarters were the difference for the Trojans, outscoring the Falcons, 25-16, in the second and third quarters for a Section 3-AAA victory Friday.
Ryan Demary led Derry with 29 points.
Adam Kezmarsky was the top scorer for Brownsville (0-9, 0-4) with 14 points. Corey Watkins had 13 and Scott Fraley added 10.
Belle Vernon 50, Mount Pleasant 48 – The game was tied after three quarters with the Leopards coming through in the fourth quarter for a Section 3-AAA home victory. Matt Rowland led the winning effort with 24 points. Chris Trenk added 10.
Chartiers-Houston 50, Beth-Center 37 – The Bulldogs led 9-7 after the first quarter, but couldn’t hold the lead in a Section 3-AA road loss.
Garrett Balas led Beth-Center with 13 points. Jeff King finished with 10.
Mapletown 67, Jefferson-Morgan 58 – The Maples remained atop the Section 2-A standings with a home victory over the Rockets. Mapletown improves to 4-0 in the section and 6-2 overall.
Trailing 43-29 at the half, Jefferson-Morgan made a bit of a run in the third quarter, 13-8. The teams played to a 16-all draw in the fourth quarter.
Andy Erjavek led Mapletown with 21 points. Gerod Buckhalter scored 14 and Justin Corso added 10.
Matt Muscavitch was Jefferson-Morgan’s leading scorer with 19 points. Matt Ferencak and Jim Basilone both scored 10.
Clairton 72, Frazier 56 – It was tough going for the Commodores at home, dropping a Section 3-A game against the visiting Bears. Frazier drops to 0-2 in the section and 1-8 overall.
Clairton’s Kevin Ford led all scorers with 24 points.
Steve Erdely hit five 3-pointers for Frazier on his way to a team-high 21 points. Wayne Lonce added 18.
Wrestling
Belle Vernon 34, Uniontown 33 – The Leopards won six bouts, four by fall, one by forfeit and the other by decision for a Section 2-AAA home victory Friday.
Travis Dunn (135), Trenton Scott (171), Joe Burns (275) and Jason Weslager (112) won by fall for Belle Vernon. Justin Greiner won by a 21-12 decision at 152 pounds with Justin Brumley winning by forfeit at 160 pounds.
Jon Guth started things for the Red Raiders with a forfeit at 125 pounds, followed by Rob Holt’s win by forfeit at 130. Jason King (140), Nathan Klingensmith (145) and Jay Ditmore (189) won by decision. Dan Sauntch won by injury default at 119 pounds.
