Hairston leads Connellsville to victory over Peters Township James Hairston tossed in a game-high 22 points to help Connellsville remain unbeaten in Section 2-AAAA play with a 62-38 victory at Peters Township Tuesday night.
Hairston connected on eight shots from the field and was 6-of-7 from the foul line.
The Falcons trailed 12-9 after one quarter, and led only 18-17 at halftime. Connellsville then took a seven-point lead after three quarters, and iced the game with a 24-7 fourth-quarter advantage.
Terrence McCrae added 14 points for Connellsville, which ran its Section 2-AAAA record to 5-0 and its overall mark to 8-2.
Jimmy Ellis led Peters Township with nine points. The Indians fall to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in section play.
Connellsville returns to action Friday, facing Blackhawk at 5:30 p.m. in the Blackhawk Christmas Tournament.
Albert Gallatin 64, Trinity 53 – Jared Lint led three Colonials in double figures with a game-high 23 points as Albert Gallatin played a strong second half and defeated visiting Trinity in Section 2-AAAA action.
Nate Turner and Craig Hriblan added 13 points each for the Colonials, who improved to 7-3 overall and 2-2 in section play. Both Hriblan and Lint nailed three treys apiece.
Trailing 21-18 at halftime, Albert Gallatin switched to a 1-3-1 trap. The move paid off, as the Colonials held an 11-point third-quarter advantage.
In the final quarter, Albert Gallatin put the game away at the foul line, hitting 15-of-16 shots.
Brownsville 51, Southmoreland 46 – Corey Watkins led a balanced scoring attack with 12 points as the Falcons won their first game of the season, a Section 3-AAA victory over the Scotties.
Brian Gates added 11 points, and Scott Fraley eight for Brownsville (1-9, 1-4).
Southmoreland led 12-5 after one quarter, but the Falcons rallied to deadlock the game at 20 at halftime. Brownsville then took control of the game with a 17-11 third-quarter advantage.
Tom Beal led the Scotties with 11 points, and Matt O’Donnell added 10.
Carmichaels 53, Avella 32 – Jamie Kowalczyk ripped the nets for a game-high 28 points to lift the visiting Mikes past the Eagles in Section 2-A action.
Kowalczyk knocked down seven shots from the field, including three three-pointers, and hit 11-of-13 free throws.
Avella led 11-10 after one quarter, but Carmichaels (5-4, 3-2) stormed back with a 20-6 second-quarter advantage. The Mikes shot 31 free throws, making 21, compared to Avella’s 14.
Bob Somplatsky led Avella with 15 points.
Our Lady Sacred Heart 54, Frazier 27 – Andrew Zivic led a balanced scoring attack with 13 points as the visiting Commodores fell in non-section action.
Eric Metcalfe added 11 points for the winners, and Adam Schichtsky nine.
Wayne Lonce led Frazier (1-8) with 10 points, and Ryan Keebler added nine. Keebler led the team with six rebounds, and Lonce chipped in five.
Our Lady of Sacred Heart jumped out to a 17-4 first-quarter lead and never looked back.
Girls Basketball
Chartiers-Houston 56, Beth-Center 43 – Courtney Kurowski and Ashley Amos reached double figures, but it wasn’t enough as the Lady Bulldogs fell to the Lady Buccaneers in Section 5-AA action.
Kurowski tossed in a team-high 13 points, with Amos adding 10.
Beth-Center drops to 3-5 overall and 1-4 in section play.
Boys Swimming
Laurel Highlands 100, Connellsville 41 – Dustin Stalnaker and Adam Collins captured two first-place finishes each to lead the Mustangs past the Falcons in non-section action.
Stalnaker’s time of 1:53.82 topped the field in the 200 freestyle, while his mark of 1:08.58 was tops in the 100 backstroke.
Collins captured the 200 IM with a time of 2:13.27, and he also bested the 500 freestyle field with a mark of 5:16.51.
Jack Macioce, Ben Bonchosky, Chris Hunchuck and Alex Mundel also picked up first-place finishes, as Laurel Highlands improved to 4-2.
Nathan Whoric brought home Connellsville’s lone victory with a time of 56.67 in the 100 freestyle.
Girls Swimming
Laurel Highlands 103, Connellsville 83 – The Lady Falcons won a series of small battles, but lost the war as the Fillies came away with a non-section victory.
Laurel Highlands (3-3) captured four events – 200 IM, 50 freestyle, 200 freestyle relay and 100 breaststroke – compared to Connellsville’s eight. The Fillies’ Erin Perry won two events, posting a time of 2:32.05 in the 200 IM and a mark of 1:18.44 in the 100 backstroke. Theresa Riley topped the 50 freestyle field with a time of 26.86, and Laurel Highlands’ winning 200 freestyle relay team of Riley, Perry, Kara Dinsmore and Keri Smiell posted a mark of 1:52.54.
Connellsville’s Marie Nedley and Colleen McLaughlin captured two events each, with Nedley winning the 200 freestyle (2:06.97) and 500 freestyle (5:37.27), and McLaughlin taking the 100 butterfly (1:09.97) and diving (145.20) events.
