Beth-Center defeats Bentworth Beth-Center took an early 13-4 first-quarter lead and never looked back as the Bulldogs defeated Bentworth 42-35 in a Section 5-AA contest.
Brittany Cole led the way with 17 points, while teammate Samantha Slagle added 15.
Cassie Yannacci was the high scorer for Bentworth with eight points, two of which were 3-pointers.
This contest marked the conclusion of both the Beth-Center and Bentworth seasons.
Elizabeth-Forward 47, Waynesburg Central 38 – Allison Liptak fired in 15 points as Elizabeth-Forward defeated Waynesburg Central in a section 3-AAA contest.
Jessica Plummer added 11 points for E-F.
Cigi Wright was the high scorer for Waynesburg Central with 18 points, including 2-of-5 free throws and two 3-point goals.
This concludes the season for Waynesburg, while section-leading Elizabeth-Forward (19-4, 14-0) will participate in the WPIAL Playoffs.
Geibel Catholic 51, California 14 – The Lady Gators almost outscored California in the first by their first-quarter output as they rolled to an easy win over California in Section 2-A..
Geibel scored 13 first-quarter points, and the Lady Trojans totaled 13 for the game.
Senior Meghan Barry had the hot hand for Geibel and tossed in 15 points, while Emily Pennington added 11.
Freshman Ashley Martinak was the high scorer for California with three points.
The Lady Gators will participate in the WPIAL playoffs, and California finishes its season at 2-20 overall and 1-13 in the section.
Boys basketball
Turkeyfoot Valley 77, Hyndman 60 – Brett Clevenger tied a school record with eight 3-pointers en route to game-high 29 points as Turkeyfoot Valley downed Hyndman in the West Pac.
Clevenger also grabbed nine rebounds, five assists and posted four steals.
Bob Lager and Brandon Ream also scored in double digits with 12 and 11 points.
Derek Hasselroad was the high scorer for Hyndman with 16 points, Tom Johnson scored 15, including three 3-pointers, Cory Diehl scored 14 and Brian Schaeffer added 13.
The Rams (6-14) will travel to Rockwood today at 7:30 p.m.
Men’s basketball
California (Pa.) 78, Slippery Rock 75 – The Vulcans rallied from behind Wednesday for a PSAC-West road victory.
California trailed 37-33 at the half, but outscored Slippery Rock in the second half, 78-75.
Ryan Stefanski was 6-of-10 from the field, including 5-of-10 from 3-point range, and 4-of-4 from the foul line to lead the Vulcans (18-6, 5-1) with 21 points. Ishmieal Kamara added 19 and Tom Frederick contributed 12 to the win.
Dave Freeman led Slippery Rock (5-13, 0-6) with 23 points to go over 1,000 points in his career. Jeremy Cook was also in double figures with a career-high 20 points.
Women’s basketball
California (Pa.) 85, Slippery Rock 52 – The Vulcans had no problem on the road Wednesday, moving out to a 45-28 halftime lead for another PSAC-West victory.
California improves to 6-0 in the conference and 20-1 overall, while Slippery Rock drops to 2-4 in the conference and 7-12 overall.
Megan Storck and Sara McKinney both went 11-of-17 from the field for the Vulcans with Storck scoring 25 points and McKinney adding 23.
Sameera Philyaw scored 12 points in the victory. Uniontown’s Beth Lengvarsky went 1-of-2 from the foul line to go with a pair of rebounds.
Erin Frankovich led Slippery Rock with 15 points.
