Local Round-Up
The California women’s tennis team had a long trip Sunday, but the distance was worth it with a hard fought 5-4 non-conference victory at Mercyhurst. The Vulcans won three of five singles matches and two of three doubles matches to improve to 7-4 overall.
Kylie Corsi won in straight sets at No. 3 singles and Daniella Zevallos won by default at No. 6 singles. Katalina Martinez dropped the first set at No. 4 singles, but rallied for a tiebreaker in the second and hung on for a 6-0 decision in the third for the win.
Olga Gonzalez and Linda Escobedo dropped their singles matches, but were victorious at No. 1 doubles. Zevallos and Renee James won the deciding match by default at No. 3 doubles.
Men’s basketball
Pitt-Greensburg 75, Lake Erie College 74 – The Bobcats held on Saturday by rallying in the second half for an AMCC home victory. David Winfrey scored three points and had a team-high eight assists. Scott Winfrey scored only two points, but grabbed three rebounds in limited action.
Boys wrestling
Yough Tournament – Uniontown placed second out of seven teams Saturday with nine wrestlers placing.
Jeremy Ditmore finished first at 171 pounds and recorded the fastest two pins in 50 seconds.
Jonathan Guth (119), Nathan Klingensmith (135), Jonathan Van Bremen (145) and Dan Newlon (189) all placed second. Jeremy Rice (103), Matt Donesec (130) and Bryon Bianchini (215) finished third.
Uniontown capped a busy week after winning a pair of dual matches earlier in the week. The Red Raiders defeated Jefferson-Morgan, 51-24, and Brownsville, 58-15, to improve their overall record to 8-8.
Girls basketball
Greensburg Salem 81, Connellsville 80, 2OT – Megan Marsh hit a foul shot with one second left in double overtime Saturday to give the Lady Golden Lions a non-section victory in the season finale for both teams.
Connellsville rallied to tie the game in the fourth quarter, then both teams scored 10 points in the first overtime period.
Alexis Metros led Connellsville (11-13) with 21 points. Christine Salandra scored 20 and Ashley Benzio added 14.
Laura Klimchock was a one-girl wrecking crew for Greensburg Salem (11-13) with 45 points.
