Cal U women keep on winning The top-ranked team in the NCAA Division II East Region, the California University of Pa.’s women basketball team was up to the task with an 89-50 drubbing on the road at Clarion.
The Vulcans led 49-26 at the half and never slowed down to improve their PSAC-West record to 8-0 with an overall record of 22-1. Clarion falls to 4-2 in the conference and 14-8 overall.
Five Vulcan players were in double figures with Becky Siembak’s 19 points leading the way. Megan Storck scored 18 on 7-of-8 field goals with Sara McKinney also proficient from the field (7-of-10) for 14 points. Suzie Gyarfas’ magic number was 12 – 12 points and 12 rebounds. Sameera Philyaw also matched points and rebounds with 10.
Pitt-Greensburg 70, Frostburg (Md.) State 64 – The Lady Bobcats built a seven-point halftime lead, and then held on for an AMCC road victory. Pitt-Greensburg improves to 9-1 in the conference and 17-5 overall. Frostburg State goes to 3-6 in the conference and 9-12 overall.
Annie Sral had a double-double for the Lady Bobcats with 17 points and 13 rebounds.
Boys wrestling
Albert Gallatin 36, Trinity 35 – The non-section match came down to the last bout, and Jeff Lawrence was up to the task for the Colonials by pinning Mike Day in 48 seconds at 119 pounds after Albert Gallatin trailed 35-30 through 13 bouts.
The match began at 125 pounds and Trinity dominated early with five straight wins. Jared Hirtz switched the momentum for Albert Gallatin with a pin at 152, then John Ptak (160) and Charlie Belch (171) followed suit with falls.
After losing at decision at 189, Albert Gallatin again rallied with a 9-3 decision by Marc Berry at 215 pounds and a 2-1 overtime decision by Ryan Martelli at heavyweight. Jon Bittinger kept the ball rolling with a pin at 103, but Kyle Balon’s forfeit win put the Hillers ahead to set up Lawrence’s heroics.
Boys basketball
Fort Cherry 74, Jefferson-Morgan 67 – The Rockets trailed by four points after three quarters, but Fort Cherry held off the home team for a non-section victory. Jefferson-Morgan finishes the season with an overall record of 5-19.
Vince Kraft led the Rockets with 14 points with Jeff Coneybeer adding 13.
Men’s basketball
Clarion 63, California (Pa.) 61 – The visiting Vulcans rally fell short, losing a PSAC-West contest on the road. California falls to 6-2 in the conference and 19-7 overall while Clarion improves to 6-1 in the conference and 17-5 overall.
Tom Frederick led the Vulcan attack with 15 points. Ryan Stefanski had 13 and Gerrmar Ballard scored 12 off the bench.
Rollie Smith led all scorers for Clarion with 21 points.
Frostburg (Md.) State 99, Pitt-Greensburg 85 – The home team made its halftime lead stand with an AMCC victory over the visiting Bobcats. Uniontown’s David Winfrey went 1-of-2 from the foul line with three rebounds and four assists.
