Many local athletes headed for WPIAL swims

Due to a misunderstanding, only a partial list of WPIAL Swimming and Diving Meet qualifiers was listed in Thursday’s editions of the Herald-Standard. Following is a more complete list.

Laurel Highlands High School will send 14 swimmers to the WPIAL Class AAA meet, to be held Feb. 22 and 23 at Trees Pool on the Oakland campus of the University of Pittsburgh.

Girls representing Laurel Highlands are Sara Bonchosky, Keri Smiell, Kara Dinsmore, Theresa Reilly, Angela Shotter, Erin Perry and Megan Girod.

Boys making the trip for LH are Kevin Collins, Dustin Stalnaker, Adam Collins, Zernie Parker, Jimmy Tesauro, Will Ashton, Tony Marghella, Alex Mundel and Eric Wang.

Also in the Class AAA event will be six Connellsville athletes, including divers Nicole Bucci and Colleen McLaughlin. Diving championships will be held Friday and Saturday at Pine Richland High School.

Swimmers qualifying from Connellsville are Kyle Lilley, Jeremy Keefer, Nathan Whoric and Ryan Mastowski.

Uniontown High School qualified 11 athletes for the WPIAL Class AA events, including diver Eric Hughes, who will compete tonight at Pine Richland High School.

Swimmers qualifying from Uniontown include Brady Christopher, Dave Slusarick, Steve Lint, Wes Winning, Rick Jenkins, Ron Milne, Aaron Moreau, Fran Smith, Andy Glisan and Rick Moser.

Southmoreland High School’s Ashley Yelinek qualified for the Class AA event.

Qualifiers for the Class AA event from Belle Vernon are Natasha Puskavich, Amanda Baker, Sarah Naylor and the girls’ 200 and 400-yard freestyle relay teams and the girls’ 200-yard medley relay team.
