Basketball Local duo sets UPG marks
The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg men’s basketball team had members set some milestones.
On Wednesday, in a 90-85 loss to LaRoche, freshman guard and Uniontown graduate David Winfrey set a new school record for assists in a game by a player with 12 assists.
On Feb. 3, brother Scott Winfrey scored his 500th point in a 76-72 win over Westminster.
Winfrey currently has 502 career points.
He is also fifth on the team with 35 assists this season. In the team’s record book, Winfrey is fourth in career assists, second in career three-pointers, fourth in career steals and fifth in career games played.
Mount Pleasant graduate Phil Grenda also scored his 500th career point on Feb. 5 in a 63-52 win at Penn State Altoona.
Grenda currently has 548 career points.
This season, he is second on the team in points with 270, second in total field goals made, third in rebounds and first in blocked shots. In the team’s record book, Grenda is second in career blocks, sixth in career rebounds and fifth in career field goals made.
Polosky doing well at NKU
Mapletown graduate Kristin Polosky played well for Northern Kentucky University in its recent 71-54 win over Brescia College.
The 6-foot-1 senior scored four points, grabbed nine rebounds, dished out three assists and had one steal in 26 minutes of action.
Polosky leads the Lady Norse with 97 assists and 31 blocked shots.
NKU has a record of 19-4 and 14-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and is currently ranked 21st nationally in NCAA Division II.
Wrestling
Pradera wins PAC crown
Waynesburg College junior wrestler Jaime Pradera won the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championship Wednesday in the 184-pound bracket.
Pradera defeated Washington & Jefferson’s Nate Jones to claim the title on a 4-3 decision.
The win marks Pradera’s first career conference title and tournament championship.
Three Yellow Jackets were runners-up in their respective weight classes.
Freshman Ken Laird lost to Thiel’s Steve Dedrick at 149 pounds on a 14-4 major decision.
Freshman Mike Olem lost to Thiel’s Rog Regner 14-2 at 125 pounds.
Sophomore Bryan Patnesky was pinned by Washington & Jefferson’s Matt Smith in 45 seconds in the 174 title bout.
Football
Kaufman signs with Cal
Uniontown senior Harry Kaufman III recently signed a letter of intent with California University of Pennsylvania. Kaufman started in 38 consecutive football games freshman through senior year for the Red Raiders. He helped Uniontown register an undefeated regular season in 2001.
He was named to the All-County team 2000-2002, All-Conference (Keystone) player 2001-2002, PA Football News All-State honorable mention in 2001 and second team in 2002, PA Football News All-Academic Team 2002 and was a team captain.
Kaufman was the class president freshman through senior year, is a SADD Club member, Science Olympiad Captain and Interact Club member.
