Carson sparks Brownsville win over GCC Burgettstown 70, Beth-Center 52 – Burgettstown fought its way to a 10-8 lead in the first period, then slowly pulled away from host Beth-Center in a Section 5-AA clash.

The Blue Devils (2-1) led 26-18 at halftime and 47-34 after three.

Garret Balas topped the Bulldogs (0-9, 0-3) in scoring with 21. Brad Ferea followed with 16 and Matt Dearing tossed in 10.

Brian McNabb and Jason Young led Burgettstown with 29 and 25 points, respectively.

Beth-Center travels to Charleroi on Tuesday.

Girls basketball

Albert Gallatin 61, Latrobe 36 – Loui Hall led with a game-high 27 points and 21 rebounds as Albert Gallatin rolled to an easy win over Latrobe in non-section action on Saturday.

The Lady Colonials (11-2, 5-0) only led by four points at the half, but outscored Latrobe 34-13 in the second half to seal the win.

Meghan McHenry led Latrobe with 12 points.

Albert Gallatin will host Ringgold Monday at 7:30 p.m. while Latrobe hosts Peters Township on Jan. 9.

Waynesburg Central 46, McGuffey 22 – Cigi Wright scored 14 points and Jenny Marshall had 13 as Waynesburg Central knocked off visiting McGuffey in a Section 3-AAA game.

The second-place Lady Raiders improved to 7-4 overall and 4-1 in section play, while the Lady Highlanders fell to 3-11 and 0-5.

Waynesburg held advantages of 15-7, 28-9 and 34-17 at the breaks.

Helen Higgins grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for the Lady Raiders.

Marissa McMurray led McGuffey with seven points.

California 72, Millersville 42 – California University of Pa. increased its record to 11-0 at Millersville University (7-4) as the Lady Vulcans held the Marauders to just 12 field goals and a 16.7 shooting percentage in PSAC action.

The Vulcan women, off to a best-ever school start, controlled the game from the opening tip-off as they posted an 8-0 run to start the game and were up 17-1 after the first eight minutes of play.

California pulled down 56 rebounds in the game including 43 defensive boards.

Sameera Philyaw led with 15 points followed by junior forward Becky Siembak who had 12 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore Erin Dillon scored 10 points and senior center Suzie Gyarfas had a game-high 14 rebounds, eight points and seven blocked shots.

Gema Robles led Millersville with 14 points and nine rebounds.

The Vulcans play at West Chester University today with games at 1 and 3 p.m.

Indiana 90, St. Vincent 50 – Sarah Zdesar scored 18 points to lead a group of five players in double figures as Indiana University of Pa. cruised past visiting St. Vincent.

Cassandra Cutts was the only Lady Bearcat to hit double digits with 11 points. Connellsville graduate Morgan Foley contributed six points with three-of-three shooting for St. Vincent (7-7) and also had one rebound, one assist and one steal. Geibel Catholic graduate Erica Hogan totaled six points, including one 3-pointer, and had one assist.

Roberts Wesleyan College 68, Geneva College 48 – Jennifer Stuczynski and Christina Volpe chalked up 16 and 15 points, respectively, as Roberts Wesleyan rolled over host Geneva.

Jen Rawding was the only Geneva player to hit double figures with a game-high 17 points. Laurel Highlands graduate Sabrina Adams had four steals and one assist.
