Ankrom hits milestone
Waynesburg College 69, Penn State-Altoona 62 – Uniontown graduate and Yellow Jacket senior Ray Robinson scored a team-high 18 points, as Waynesburg held off winless Penn State-Altoona. Robinson was 7 of 17 from the field, including 3 of 8 from three-point range. He moved past Harold Hamlin and Tim Tyler and into seventh place on Waynesburg’s all-time scoring list with 1,689 points.
Waynesburg Central grad and Jacket senior Aaron Ankrom added 12 points, as did Mike Pamepinto.
Waynesburg, in improving to 5-4, led 31-28 at halftime. The Yellow Jackets led 0-9 Penn State-Altoona by only one point with seven minutes to play before a 9-0 run gave the hosts some breathing room.
Penn State-Altoona’s Brandon Battles led all scorers with 19 points.
High School Basketball
Scott Cree and P.J. Schumacher scored 11 points each, as Waynesburg Central picked up a 49-44 Section 3-AAA victory over visiting Belle Vernon Tuesday night.
Nate Stoner added eight rebounds, while Schumacher chipped in four assists.
Waynesburg led 8-4 after one quarter, and 18-14 at the half. The lead remained at four, as the teams played to a 16-16 draw in the third quarter.
Belle Vernon’s John Murt led all scorers with 16 points, while Matt Cyktor (12) and Stephen King (10) also reached double digits.
Waynesburg improves to 10-3 overall and 4-2 in section play, while Belle Vernon drops to 3-11 and 2-4.
Ringgold 46, Albert Gallatin 40 – The Rams got out of the gate fast, leading 18-4 after one quarter en route to a Section 2-AAAA win over the host Colonials.
Troy Yonkers tossed in a game-high 22 points to pace Ringgold, which improved to 8-6 overall and 2-3 in section play.
Chris Moore paced Albert Gallatin (2-12, 0-5) with 13 points.
Meyersdale 75, Turkeyfoot Valley 47 – Tyler Minnick led three Meyersdale players in double figures with 20 points in a West-PAC Conference victory over the host Rams.
T.J. Buterbough added 17 points, while Nick Buterbough chipped in 10 for the winners, which led 18-12 after one quarter and 43-26 at halftime.
Bob Lager had a fine effort in the loss, tossing in 23 points and pulling down 17 rebounds. Seth Livengood added eight points and 12 rebounds.
Turkeyfoot Valley falls to 2-10 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
Women’s Basketball
Waynesburg College 70, Frostburg State 57 – Candice Eyerman tied her own school record with nine three-pointers, leading the Jackets to a non-conference victory.
Eyerman finished with a season-high 33 points, besting her previous high of 28 against Penn State-Altoona Dec. 4, 2002. She also hit nine treys against Lehman at the Salisbury Tournament Dec. 7, 2002.
Eyerman continues to lead Waynesburg College in scoring, averaging 17.25 points per game. She is shooting a phenomenal 46.8 from three-point range.
Emily Williams added 10 points against Frostburg, while Kyana Bradley and Lila St. Denis both chipped in seven rebounds. Rachel Dillon finished with eight assists and five steals.
Tracy Little led four Frostburg State players in double figures with 15 points. Kelly True had 11, while Holly Myers and Kim Faust added 10 each.
Saint Vincent College 63, Geneva College 49 – Connellsville graduate and Lady Bearcat senior Morgan Foley tied for game-high honors with 15 points to lead Saint Vincent past Geneva in American Mideast Conference action.
Foley was 4 of 4 from the field and 7 of 8 from the foul line to go along with four rebounds as the Lady Bearcats improved to 9-7 overall and 3-0 in conference play. Ford City graduate Cassandra Cutts added 13 points and three blocks.
Geibel Catholic graduate Erica Hogan finished with seven points, six steals, two rebounds and two assists.
Renee Freeman and Ali Cananzi led Geneva (7-8, 0-4) with 15 points each.
Laurel Highlands graduate and senior guard Sabrina Adams was held scoreless in 21 minutes of action, but finished with two rebounds, one steal and one assist.
Saint Vincent led 28-22 at halftime, came up big at the foul line, connecting on 22 of 27 foul shots.
Monday’s late boys
Charleroi 55, Carmichaels 52, OT – A close game throughout, the Cougars outscored the visiting Mikes, 8-5, in the overtime period for a non-section victory.
Charleroi held a four-point lead at the half, but Carmichaels (4-5) cut three points off the deficit in the third quarter.
Bobby Hathaway led the Mikes with 18 points. Jono Menhart and Jamie Kowalczyk both scored 12.
Luke Kovalchuk scored a game-high 20 points for the Cougars. Brad Kurowsky had 12 and Tim Mudrick added 10.
Monday’s late girls
Brownsville 68, Burgettstown 49 – Melissa Dillinger led four Lady Falcons in double digits with 16 points in a Section 5-AA win over the host Lady Blue Devils.
Angela Smith added 12 points, Gina Pelehac 11 and Christine Libertini 10 for Brownsville, which improves to 5-8 overall and 5-2 in section play.
The Lady Falcons jumped out to a 19-12 first-quarter lead, and stretched their edge to 40-28 at halftime.
Sally Schilinski led Burgettstown with a game-high 22 points, while Annie Markavich added 10.
Peters Township 75, Uniontown 60 – The home team led by eight at the half, then finished with an eight-point advantage in the fourth quarter for a Section 2-AAAA victory.
Emily Fisher scored 20, Jocelyn Chandler had 19 and Jill Monahan added 11 for the Lady Red Raiders.
Peters Township’s Keigh Sherratt led all scorers with 23 points. Laura Calabrese (15), Jackie Schaefer (12) and Shannon McNamara (11) gave Peters Township four players in double figures.
Derry 45, Southmoreland 27 – The Lady Scots made second quarter run, but Derry countered by outscoring the home team, 21-2, in the third quarter for a Section 3-AAA win.
Southmoreland’s Renee Frederick and Beth Wisniewski scored six points each.
Avella 66, California 22 – Lisa Mitchell scored 24 points for Avella to lead the Lady Eagles to a Section 2-A victory.
Katey Doman led the Lady Trojans with seven points.
