Carmichaels girls set school record with 11th straight victory Carmichaels’ 64-35 victory at Jefferson-Morgan Thursday night was a game the Lady Mikes won’t soon forget, as far as individual and team accomplishments go.
Meghan Wood poured in 26 points and Christina Antonelli rang up 19, both career highs, as Carmichaels (11-1, 7-0) won its 11th consecutive game to set a new school record for girls basketball.
Coach Jim Lane’s Lady Mikes were defeated by Charleroi in their season-opener, but haven’t lost since.
“It’s a nice record to have, but we’re just taking it one game at a time,” Lane said. “There’s still a long way to go in the season.”
Wood and Antonelli dropped in five field goals apiece. Wood also was a perfect eight-for-eight from the foul line.
Carmichaels soared out to a 20-2 lead in the first period and never looked back.
The Rockettes (3-9, 2-5) were led by Shanna Yourchik, who scored 14 points after missing the five previous games due to injury. J-M lost all five games in her absence.
Elizabeth-Forward 44, Waynesburg Central 36 – Allison Liptak scored a game-high 21 points as Elizabeth-Forward edged past Waynesburg Central in Section 3-AAA action.
Teammate Stephanie Wehrle tallied 11.
Elizabeth-Forward led 15-12 at the end of the first quarter and got the cushion needed to win by holding the Lady Raiders to just four points in the second quarter.
Erika Keller had the hot hand for Waynesburg with 13 points.
Waynesburg hosts Fort Cherry on Saturday.
Mapletown 44, West Greene 38 – Brittani Schock and Jessica Shuppe combined for 28 of Mapletown’s 44 points as the defeated West Greene in Section 2-A action.
Schock and Shuppe each fired in 14 points, while Jessica Schock added eight points.
West Greene’s Rachel Phillips had a game-high 17 points, including 9-of-17 from the foul line. Glenda Adamson and Kristen Martin also landed double figures with 11 and 10 points.
The Lady Maples will host Trinity (W.Va.) on Jan. 14.
Avella 36, Frazier 23 – Frazier falls to 3-12 overall with a Section 2-A loss to Avella.
A.J. Morgan was the high scorer for Frazier with seven points, while Brooke Carson and Jessica Stahl both added five.
The Lady Commodores’ next two games are away against Yough today and Belle Vernon on Monday.
South Side Beaver 53, Brownsville 47 – Alyssa Clark led with 35 points, including 13-of-19 from the foul line as South Side Beaver (7-1) defeated Brownsville in Section 5-AA action.
Christina Libertini was the high scorer for Brownsville with 17 points, including five 3-pointers while Julia Martini added 10.
The Lady Falcons (4-3) will visit Connellsville on Monday.
Boys basketball
Rockwood 77, Turkeyfoot Valley 58 – Turkeyfoot Valley remains winless at 0-3 with a West Pac loss to visiting Rockwood.
Frank Stairs led the way with 22 points as four Rockwood players scored in double figures. Teammates Derrick Recker scored 20 and Cody Sanner and John Hay added 14 and 10 points, respectively.
Bob Lager was high scorer for Turkeyfoot with 19 points and 18 rebounds. Seth Livengood scored 17 points and pulled down 21 rebounds and Seth Tressler added 11.
High school wrestling
Albert Gallatin 64, Bentworth 3 – Albert Gallatin improved to 8-2 with a lopsided non-section victory over visiting Bentworth.
Jeff Lawrence had the quickest of the Colonials’ seven pins, clamping John Jovorsky in just 19 seconds at 119. Other falls for AG were by Ryan Howell at 145, Jared Hirtz at 152, all-time school wins leader John Ptak at 160, Charlie Belch at 171, Tom Karpency at 189 and Marc Berry at 215.
Brandon Radicic won a 15-4 major decision for coach Duane Dupont’s squad at 140. Winning by decision were Jerod Chapman, 4-0 at 130, and Ryan Martelli, 7-1 at 275. Jon Bittinger and Justin Williams picked up forfeit wins.
Albert Gallatin travels to Ringgold on Wednesday.
College wrestling
Pensacola Christian College 25, Waynesburg 20 – Laurel Highlands graduate Chris Pierce pinned Kevin Grace in 20 seconds in the men’s heavyweight match, but the Waynesburg wrestling team dropped to 1-5 with a loss to Pensacola Christian College.
Other Waynesburg wrestlers who posted wins were Mike Olem (125), Chris Vicente (141) and Bryan Patnesky (175).
Men’s basketball
Waynesburg 93, Lancaster Bible College 44 – Uniontown graduate Ray Robinson climbed to fourth on Waynesburg’s all-time scoring leaders (1,719 points) with a season-high 30 points as Waynesburg rolled to an easy win over Lancaster Bible College.
Robinson jumped three places in one game on the scoring leaders list passing Jim Keller (1972-76), Mike Taylor (1977-81) and Rod Wheeler (1976-80).
Teammate Ray Gillespie was the only other Yellow Jacket in double digits with 10 points, including a perfect 5-of-5 from the field.
Waynesburg will visit Penn-State Altoona on Jan. 13.
