PIAA schedule set for local teams
The future schedule of three local basketball teams has been determined while two others will be left out in the cold in an attempt to tag along into the PIAA Basketball Championships. The Connellsville Falcons will be the third-seeded team out of District 7 (WPIAL) due to Penn Hill’s 51-41 victory over Upper St. Clair in the boys Class AAAA title game Saturday at Duquesne University’s Palumbo Center. Connellsville will play Saturday against the No. 2 seed from the Pittsburgh City League (District 8).
The Albert Gallatin girls remain alive in the hunt for a state championship and the road to Hershey begins Friday night for the Lady Colonials, the No. 6 seed from the WPIAL. Albert Gallatin will face Schenley, the City League champions.
California will be the third seeded out of Class A due to Union’s 52-48 win over Clairton in the title game. The Trojans will play Southern Fulton, the District 5 champions, on Friday night.
Two teams were not as fortunate with the weekend’s results. Laurel Highlands was eliminated when Oakland Catholic, the WPIAL Class AAAA runner-up, defeated Hempfield in the semifinals. The Uniontown boys needed Hopewell to win the boys Class AAA title, but the Red Raiders’ hopes for a state title were dashed with Blackhawk’s 66-59 victory over the Vikings Friday night.
