Hudson leads Blue Jays past Pirates
DUNEDIN, Fla. (AP) – Orlando Hudson homered and drove in three runs to lead the Toronto Blue Jays over the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-9 Tuesday. Hudson also doubled, singled and scored three times. Kevin Cash doubled home Hudson with the go-ahead run in the eighth inning.
“I’m just trying to get my swing down now before we go into the season,” said Hudson, who was 0-for-16 last spring.
Playing second base, Hudson made a diving catch that ended the third inning with a runner on third.
Tanyon Sturtze pitched two shutout innings for the Blue Jays, allowing one hit and striking out three. He was 4-18 with 5.18 ERA with Tampa Bay last year.
Pittsburgh starter Brian Meadows allowed one run on three hits, walking two and striking one over three innings. He is competing for the fifth spot in the rotation.
Dave Berg homered for Toronto but also made two errors at third base. Jack Wilson and Abraham Nunez each had two hits for Pittsburgh.
NOTES: Toronto RHP Roy Halladay will make his second start of the spring on Wednesday against Cincinnati’s RHP Chris Reitsma. Halladay is set to throw 45-50 pitches. … Blue Jays DH-1B Josh Phelps (right knee) says he expects to play in his first spring game on Thursday. … In a “B” game at Bradenton, RHP Kip Wells threw three innings, allowing one hit and striking out three.
