NCAA East Division women’s championships set at Cal U
A weekend full of basketball is on tap at California University of Pennsylvania. The Lady Vulcans basketball team, 29-1 and ranked No. 2 nationally in the latest NCAA Division II women’s basketball poll, will host the East Region of the Division II National Championship Tournament beginning this afternoon and running through the regional final game Monday night.
Games begin at 1 p.m. today, when Longwood (26-4 and seeded third) plays sixth seeded West Liberty State (24-7). That game will be followed at 3 p.m. by a match-up of second-seeded Glenville State (27-3) against Pitt-Johnstown (seventh seeded and 21-6).
The Friday evening session features a 6 p.m. tip-off of fourth-seeded Pfeiffer (24-4) facing fifth-seeded West Chester (23-7).
The Lady Vulcans, seeded No. 1, will take on eighth-seeded Millersville (20-8) at 8 p.m. Friday.
Saturday’s schedule will pit Friday’s afternoon winners against one another at 6 p.m., with Friday’s evening winners set to meet at 8 p.m. in the semifinals.
The East Region Championship game will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, with the winner advancing to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight, to be hosted by Missouri Western State College in St. Joseph, Mo. beginning March 26.
All three qualifying teams from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference – champion California, West Chester and Millersville – will participate in the East Regional at California.
California’s men also qualified for the Division II Men’s Tournament and will be in action tonight.
The Vulcans (25-8) will play Salem International (24-5) of West Virginia at 8:30 p.m. today in the Ovens Athletic Center at Queens University in Charlotte, N.C.
Also in the men’s East Regional are PSAC champion Millersville, which will face Belmont Abbey at 2:30 p.m. Friday, and West Chester, which will meet the host Queens Royals at 6 p.m. Friday.
The same format will be used in the men’s bracket, with semifinals Saturday night and the title game Monday night. The winner will advance to the Elite Eight, to be held in Lakeland, Fla., beginning March 26.
