Fogg strong as Pirates beat Astros
KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) – Josh Fogg pitched five shutout innings before allowing a pair of runs Wednesday as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Houston Astros 11-4. Fogg gave up five hits in six innings.
“I made a couple of pitches I shouldn’t have made,” he said. “I didn’t know what I’d have left. But I came out of the sixth and I felt I had something left.”
Fogg hit Jeff Bagwell in the left hand with a pitch in the third inning, but Bagwell said wasn’t injured.
Fogg, 26, went 12-12 last season with a 4.35 ERA and is 4-1 in spring training. He had a different attitude last year.
“I was going all out just to make the team,” Fogg said. “Now I can be more relaxed and work on some things and get my arm strength built up.”
Houston’s Shane Reynolds gave up six runs and 10 hits in 4 1-3 innings, allowing a solo homer to Jose Fernandez and a two-run drive to Craig Wilson.
“Nobody likes to go out in spring training and give up runs,” Reynolds said, adding that the main purpose of exhibition games for pitchers to be “working on stuff.”
Reynolds, 34, is trying to rebound from an operation last June.
“These guys pitching now pitched at the end of September and October. The last time I pitched was June 13 and I had back surgery,” Reynolds said. “So, it may take me a little bit longer, it may not. I’m just one of those touchy-feely kind of guys that always has to hit your spots.”
