Mapletown defeats Beth-Center, 13-6 Mapletown jumped out to an early lead and survived a big day by Beth-Center’s J.D. McCarty to defeat the visiting Bulldogs, 13-6, in a high school baseball non-section game on Monday.
Chris Petrick stroked three hits for the Maples (2-1), and Jayce Donley, Justin Corso and Joe Kovach added two hits apiece.
McCarty homered and doubled twice in knocking in three runs for the Bulldogs (0-1).
Winning pitcher Corso allowed five runs on eight hits in six innings, and helped his cause with a two-out, two-run single in the first inning that put the Maples on top to stay. Matt Brown followed with a double to make it 3-0.
“Those were both big, two-out hits that got us off on the right foot,” Mapletown coach Jay Donley said.
Beth-Center scored in the second, third and fifth, but the Maples answered with runs in the bottom of each of those innings.
McCarty hit a solo homer in the second. Mapletown answered with two.
The Bulldogs put up a pair of runs in the third. The Maples countered that with one, then added three more in the fourth to go up 9-3.
Beth-Center got a two-run homer from Drew Frost in the fifth to pull within four. Mapletown cancelled that out with two of its own before the Bulldogs added one more run in the final frame.
Losing pitcher Aaron Falcone started and went two innings for Beth-Center. He was followed to the mound by McCarty and freshman Matt Stay, who each hurled two frames.
Corso, struck out seven and walked two before Petrick came on in the seventh to finish up.
Garret Balas doubled and singled for the Bulldogs.
Corso had two hits, including a double, and Andy Latusek also doubled for the Maples.
Mapletown travels to Bentworth on Friday for a 4 p.m. game.
Yough 6, Uniontown 2 – Yough took advantage of two Uniontown errors in scoring five runs in the third inning and went on to defeat the visiting Red Raiders in a non-section game.
Three of the Cougars’ third-inning runs were unearned.
John Nameiska allowed two runs in 5 2-3 innings to pick up the win. He walked three and struck out two.
Yough (1-1) had eight hits, including Bob Fiere’s double.
Losing pitcher Neil Kelly gave up two earned runs in four innings with one strikeout and one walk. Kelly also had two hits, including a double, and an RBI.
Uniontown (0-2) travels to Mount Pleasant for a 4 p.m. game today.
California 7, Charleroi 4 – Bryan Dunn pitched into the seventh inning and went 2 for 4 with a double as California defeated Charleroi in a non-section game.
Jason Dayner went 3 for 4 for the Trojans, driving in one run and scoring twice.
California trailed 1-0 before scoring four runs in the fourth to take the lead for good. Shane Tonkavitch delivered the key hit in the inning with a two-run double.
Dan DeMoss, Parke Bongiorno and Andy Galis each contributed two hits for the Trojans.
Dunn struck out nine and walked just two.
Blacklick 10, Turkeyfoot 0 – Craig Jansure pitched four scoreless innings and homered to lead Blacklick Valley over visiting Turkeyfoot Valley in a six-inning, non-section game.
Brian Strenko and Mani Bichko each doubled for Blacklick (1-0).
Seth Livengood singled twice for the Rams, who had five hits but were hurt by seven errors.
Losing pitcher Jason Stephens went three innings. Brett Clevenger struck out two in tossing two innings of relief.
Blacklick scored one run in the first, two in the third, three in the fourth and put the game away according to the 10-run rule with four in the sixth.
Turkeyfoot hosts Shanksville at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
Girls softball
Carmichaels 11, California 0 – Melissa Metcalf tossed a one-hitter and Dottie Virgili tripled as Carmicheals rolled over host California in a non-section contest.
Metcalf’s bid for a no-hitter was broken up in the sixth inning when the Lady Trojans’ Kristy Caster smacked a double. Metcalf struck out six and walked three.
The Lady Mikes (2-1) scored three runs in the second and two more in the fourth to go up 5-0. Virgili’s two-run triple highlighted a six-run sixth that capped the game’s scoring.
Losing pitcher Alison Edwards went the distance for California, striking out three and walking six. The Lady Trojans (0-3) committed seven errors.
Brownsville 12, Jefferson-Morgan 1 – Maggie Craig went 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs as Brownsville rolled over host Jefferson-Morgan in a five-inning, non-section game.
Lindsey Zidek allowed just two hits for the Lady Falcons (2-1). Amanda Voytovich knocked in a pair of runs with two singles for Brownsville.
Kristie Volchko allowed seven runs in four innings in taking the loss for the Lady Rockets (0-2).
Brownsville scored three runs in the first, one in the second, three in the fourth and five in the fifth.
The Lady Falcons travel to Monessen for a 4 p.m. game today.
Blacklick 5, Turkeyfoot 2 – Jenette Augustine went 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles, but it wasn’t enough as Turkeyfoot Valley suffered a non-section road defeat at Blacklick Valley.
Winning pitcher Lauren Stefanik struck out eight and walked five while giving up five hits. Whitney Watkins doubled twice for Blacklick (1-0), which scored single runs in the first, third and fifth, and two in the sixth.
Losing pitcher Brittany Barefoot walked eight and struck out five in 5 2-3 innings before being relieved by Karina Graziani, who got the final out in the sixth.
Coach Jane Collins’ Lady Rams (0-1) picked up single runs in the sixth and seventh. Vanessa Wheatley had a single, an RBI and two stolen bases for Turkeyfoot. Ashley Garletts also singled and Ashley Tressler delivered a sacrifice fly.
The Lady Rams host defending District 5 champion Shanksville on Thursday before traveling to Northern, Md., on Friday.
College baseball
California 3, Gannon 2; Gannon 10, California 0 – California University of Pa. split a doubleheader against visiting Gannon University in a non-conference game at Falconi Field in Washington.
Connellsville graduate Nick Damico (1-0) earned the win in the opener for the Vulcans (9-7) by allowing two runs on three hits in six innings with three walks and 10 strikeouts. Scott Simon allowed two hits in pitching a scoreless seventh to earn his first save.
Cal scored all three of its runs in the first inning with the final two coming on a two-out, two-run single by Uniontown graduate Jason Greene.
Jefferson-Morgan graduate Adam Dukate took the loss for the Vulcans in the second game, allowing seven runs on seven hits in 2 1-3 innings, although three of those runs were unearned.
Ricky Hulsinger tossed a five-hitter for Gannon.
Brian Stoecklein had a double for Cal, which travels to Salem International for a doubleheader on Thursday.
The Vulcans begin defense of their PSAC-West title on Saturday when they travel to Lock Haven.
