Uniontown rallies for win over Mount Pleasant It was better late than never for the Uniontown baseball because the Red Raiders rallied from a run down Thursday to defeat Mount Pleasant, 2-1, for a non-section road victory.
The Vikings (1-2) scored in the bottom of the first inning on Rob Patula’s sacrifice fly. Gary King settled down, shutting out Mount Pleasant over the next four innings. King finished with five strikeouts and three walks.
Winning pitcher Scott Hruby picked up where King left off, shutting out the Vikings in the final two innings with four strikeouts and a walk.
After a stellar defensive play to start the seventh, Uniontown’s Howie King was safely aboard on an error. Neil Kelly singled pinch runner Jeff King to third, and then Gary King’s single scored Jeff King and moving pinch runner Steven Kezmarsky to third. Gary King moved to second on the throw. Kezmarsky scored the winning run on Jonathan Latsnic’s single.
Latrobe 7, Connellsville 3 – Brian Boltian, Joe Myers and Tom Turnbull belted out triples to help Boltian defeat the Falcons for a non-section home victory. Jordan Weimer doubled for the Wildcats.
Phil Davis and Tony Marciante both tripled for the Falcons with Travis Henry (0-1) absorbing the loss. Davis’ three-bagger drove home two runs.
Jefferson-Morgan 14, Clay-Battelle (W.Va.) 4 – The Rockets scored 11 runs on four home runs, including three 3-run shots, for a non-section home victory. Jefferson-Morgan (3-0) hopes to continue its early season run when the Rockets entertain Frazier this afternoon.
John Pochron was a force for the Rockets on the mound and at the plate. Pochron struck out 13 of the 15 outs and helped his own cause with a three-run home run, finishing with three hits, three runs scored and four RBI.
Eric Cox hit a three-run homer and doubled to finish with two runs scored and four RBI. Ben Barbetta smacked a three-run home run and Matt Fanase opened the bottom of the first with a two-run shot.
Mike Myers had the game-winning RBI with a single.
“We’ve scored 49 runs on 45 hits in three games. We should stockpile those runs, save them for later,” Jefferson-Morgan coach John Curtis said.
Turkeyfoot Valley 4, Shanksville 3 – Seth Livengood’s RBI-single scored Chad Barkley to give the Rams a West-Pac South victory over the visiting Vikings.
Turkeyfoot (1-0, 1-1) scored a run in the second and two more in the third, but Shanksville (0-2, 0-2) rallied for two runs in the top of the fourth. Shanksville scored a run in the sixth, but winning pitcher Casey Caprini (1-0) held on the for the win. Caprini struck out 12 and walked three.
“Casey pitched an excellent game,” Turkeyfoot Valley coach Frank Ryan said. “It was a well played game by both teams for so early in the season.”
Livengood had two singles and two RBI. Barkley had two singles and scored two runs. Billy Hinzy drove home the other run for the Rams.
Carmichaels 6, Frazier 0 – The Mikes scored all the runs they would need in the first and Andy Mazur made sure the two runs would stand by allowing the Commodores only one hit. Carmichaels improves to 3-0.
Mazur (1-0) gave up an infield single to Andy Natale, the first batter of the game, but blanked Frazier in five innings with seven strikeouts. Karl Cole pitched two scoreless innings.
Shayne Busti had a single and double, scored two runs and had three stolen bases. Jeff Lapkowicz went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Jared Lapkowicz also doubled for the Mikes.
California 5, Chartiers-Houston 4 – Good ol’ fashioned hustle paid off for the Trojans, when California parlayed a strikeout, an infield single and an error into the winning run in a non-section victory.
With the score tied at 4 and one out in the bottom of the sixth inning, Tyler Haught struck out California’s Robbie Galis, but the ball got away from the catcher and Galis made it to first base. Bryan Dunn then reached base on an infield single, before Jason Dayner hit a grounder to short. Chartiers-Houston’s shortstop fielded the ball and stepped on second base for the second out, but threw wildly to first base in trying to complete a double play.
Galis scored the game-winning run on the play, and winning pitcher Shane Tonkavitch made it stand when he struck out the Buccaneers’ Justin Benson with the tying run on first base in the top of the seventh.
Tonkavitch (1-0) scattered nine hits and allowed three earned runs. He struck out seven and walked five.
Haught worked only the sixth inning and suffered the loss. Benson started and worked into the third inning, before being relieved by Andy McIlvaine.
Chartiers-Houston (2-1) led 4-0 before California dented the scoreboard in the bottom of the second. With one out, Andy Galis, Dan DeMoss and Jason Britton laced consecutive singles for the Trojans’ first run. Mark Shallenberger brought home California’s second run when he singled in DeMoss.
The Trojans (2-0) tied the game with a pair of fifth-inning runs. Dayner walked with one out, and Tonkavitch later drew a two-out base on balls. Andy Galis singled in Dayner to make it 4-3, and DeMoss tied the game when he singled home Tonkavitch.
California returns to action today, traveling to Waynesburg Central for a 4:15 p.m. non-section game.
Woodland Hills 7, Albert Gallatin 6 – Ron Kramer drove the ball past a drawn in Albert Gallatin outfield with the bases loaded and one out in the seventh inning for a non-section home win.
Scott Piper led the Colonials (1-2) with a single, double, two walks and two RBI.
High school softball
Shanksville 5, Turkeyfoot Valley 4 – The visitors put up five runs in the top of the first inning and winning pitcher Jess Sidone buckled, but didn’t break to hold on for a West Pac-South road victory.
Shanksville benefited from four consecutive walks, three bringing home runs. Becky Nicholson capped the inning with a two-run single.
Turkeyfoot’s Vanessa Wheatley had her hand in all four Lady Rams’ runs. She drove home two runs with a single in the fourth inning and scored the third run on a fielder’s choice. Wheatley drove home the final run after Jeannette Augustine.
Karina Graziani (0-1) struck out three and walked six in the loss. Turkeyfoot travels to Northern (Md.) today.
Waynesburg Central 13, Geibel Catholic 3 – Nikki Shriver tossed one-hit ball over four innings, and the Lady Raiders took advantage of 14 walks in a non-section win.
Shriver (2-0) struck out five and walked three, before being relieved in the fifth inning by Erin Giachetti. Giachetti allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits. She struck out one and walked one.
Leading 1-0, Waynesburg (2-0) took advantage of six walks, two errors and Elizabeth Greg’s RBI-single to score seven second-inning runs.
“We just took advantage of some mistakes and were able to string some runs together,” said Waynesburg coach Lou Giachetti. “Nikki’s throwing the ball really well. Our other starter, Autumn Minor, hurt her back, so we decided to go with Nikki again and she responded very well.
“It was nice to get a game in on a really nice day. It doesn’t look like the weather will cooperate here next week.”
Melinda Henderson doubled for one of Waynesburg’s five hits, and drove in two runs.
Emily Pennington paced Geibel with two hits, including a double. Pennington also suffered the loss, starting and working 2 and 2/3 innings. She allowed three hits, eight runs (seven earned), struck out one and walked seven.
The Lady Raiders return to action Monday, hosting Washington in the Section 7-AA opener.
Boys track & field
Brownsville 94, Jefferson-Morgan 43 – The Falcons didn’t seem any worse for the wear with back-to-back meets with a Section 5-AA victory over the Rockets. Brownsville ran against Beth-Center and Chartiers-Houston yesterday, but rebounded against Jefferson-Morgan with 13 first place finishes.
Doug Patterson won the long jump (18-10), triple jump (37-111/2) and the 200 (24.5). Joe Cardine had a strong performance by winning both hurdles and the javelin, and running the first leg of the 1,600 relay.
Josh Crable was a busy man by winning the 800 and 1,600 as well as running in both the 3,200 and 1,600 relay teams. Barry Davies was the scorer in the throws for Brownsville with wins in the shot put and discus.
Brian Gates (100) and Bryan Emery (3,200) were also individual winners for the Falcons.
Jeremy Weaver won the 400 for the Rockets (0-3) and ran one of the legs on the victorious 400 relay team.
Girls track & field
Brownsville 77, Jefferson-Morgan 60 – The Lady Falcons finished their third meet in less than 24 hours, but the struggle was worth the price for their first Section 5-AA victory of the season at Waynesburg Central’s track.
The difference of the meet was on the track with Brownsville (1-2, 1-2) picking up first places in two of the three relays and six individual wins.
Jill McClelland won the 1,600 (7:20) and Julie Kromer finished first in the 3,200. Angela Fraley stepped down in distance to win the 400 and 200. Jenna Jackson picked up a win in the 300 intermediate hurdles. Ashley Turner won the shot put for the Lady Falcons.
“Angela stepped up in the sprints,” Brownsville girls coach Robb Rhodes said. “We did some fine throwing. I see big things out of Ashley Turner in the future.”
Shanna Yourchik was again the story for the Lady Rockets. Yourchik won the 100 high hurdles, long jump (15-6), triple jump (31-3) and high jump (5-4). The Lady Rockets also had a strong showing in the throwing events with Haley Cratty winning the discus and Michelle Fowler finishing first in the javelin.
Rhodes was impressed with Jefferson-Morgan’s performance.
“Jefferson-Morgan’s numbers are up. They’re improving. They have Yourchick. She’s a rock,” Rhodes said.
College softball
Waynesburg 8, Pitt-Greensburg 2; Waynesburg 10, Pitt-Greensburg 2 – The Yellow Jackets swept a non-conference road doubleheader behind the strong pitching of Sarah Lansdorf and Shana D’Aurora and an offense that pounded out 23 hits in the two games.
Langsdorf (3-2) struck out seven and benefited from seven extra base hits. Haylee Swinchock, Tina Ramer and Kari Mariner all tripled for Waynesburg. Nicole January had a pair of doubles with Kerri Petko and Amanda Stanley contributing one two-bagger each.
D’Aurora (3-2) didn’t strike out any, but helped her own cause with a double. The big blow for the Yellow Jackets was Ramer’s three-run homer in the fourth inning.
College baseball
Muskingum 16, Waynesburg 6; Waynesburg 11, Muskingum 9 – The Yellow Jackets put up strong offensive numbers in both games, but managed only a split in a non-conference doubleheader at home.
Muskingum scored all 16 runs before the Yellow Jackets could put up any runs in the first game. Waynesburg had 11 hits distributed around 11 different hitters. Matt Cross had two RBI with a double and George Taylor smacked a solo home run.
With the game tied 8-8, Waynesburg (9-7-1) scored three runs on Taylor’s two-run single and Eric Holt’s RBI-single. Taylor drove home three runs while Brad Baker went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and four RBI.
Brian Gerginski, Kevin Krescanko and Holt all had two hits for Waynesburg.
Penn State-Fayette 6, CCAC-Boyce 3 – Jeff Horrell recorded his first win of the season Tuesday with a complete game home victory. Horrell (1-0) allowed two earned runs on nine hits, three strikeouts and four walks. Ryan Gondek had a two-run single in the first to finish with three RBI. Mike Miskanin smacked a solo home run in the third inning.
Matt Kibe had three singles. Brian Leichleiter and Brandon Bryner both doubled and Dan Fuller tripled for Penn State-Fayette.
Penn State-Fayette improved to 2-1 overall.
