Sewickley sweeps Brownsville in WPIAL tennis playoffs
The Brownsville boys’ tennis season ended in the quarterfinal round of the WPIAL Playoffs as Sewickley Academy blanked the Falcons, 5-0. “We knew what we were up against,” said Brownsville coach Dan LoNigro. “They are a young, but very experienced team.”
Brownsville lost to Sewickley in the finals of the 2000 playoffs and in the semifinals of the 2001 playoffs.
“It was an enjoyable ride while it lasted, but the best team definitely won today,” LoNigro said.
In the No. 1 singles match, Zack Skorupka defeated Ryan Minor 6-1, 6-3. In the No. 2 match, Evan Stiegel defeated Neil Chafin (6-1, 6-3) and Trevor Heck defeated Josh Seelye (6-1, 6-2) in No. 3 singles.
In doubles action, Eric Goldfarb and Ronnie Hevrich defeated Aaron Crable and Ian Glumac (6-1, 6-2), and the team of Ben Mantica and Paul DelPresto downed John Marcolini and Colin Ryan by the scores of 6-1, 6-1.
Brownsville loses its No. 1 and No. 2 singles players in Ryan Minor and Neil Chafin.
“We’re going to have to step it up if we want to compete next year,” LoNigro said.
The WPIAL doubles are left for the Falcons on Monday at 1 p.m. at North Allegheny. Brownsville holds the No. 3 seed in Seelye and Chafin.
