Uniontown golfers have record day against Brownsville It was a day of record breaking performances as Uniontown’s Greg Franko broke an individual record with a five-under par round of 32 and the team broke a record with a 3-over par score as the Red Raiders defeated Brownsville 188-213 in a non-section golf match Monday.

The previous record for the team was a 6-over-par performance last year against Laurel Highlands at Duck Hollow.

“I was ecstatic,” said Uniontown coach Aaron Scott. “We had probably our worst beating last week against Mount Pleasant. This is a huge confidence booster for the team and for myself.”

Zach Rockwell also finished with a sub-par round of 35 for Uniontown.

Ryan Bashour took home the top spot for Brownsville with a one-over 38.

Uniontown (4-1, 6-1) plays Yough today at the Madison Club and gear up for a key section match against Laurel Highlands on Thursday.

Waynesburg Central 191, McGuffey 197 – Robert Rohanna fired a low round 33, as Waynesburg Central remains undefeated with a non-section win at home over McGuffey (0-4, 0-6).

“Robert continually comes through for us,” said Waynesburg Central coach Rick Lofstead.

McGuffey’s Douglas Montgomery finished one stroke off the pace while teammate Josh Stollar and Waynesburg’s Aaron Pyle finished with 38s. Tommy Rohanna and Ryan Beabout also finished with 39s for Waynesburg (6-0, 4-0).

“Right now, we’re moving along pretty well,” said Lofstead. “We have a tough match Tuesday against Geibel Catholic.” The Gators visit Rohanna’s at 3 p.m. today.

Mapletown 188, West Greene 222, Clay-Battelle 326 – Chris Boord took medallist honors with a 35 as Mapletown defeated West Greene (3-5) in a Division II, Section 2 match as well as Clay-Battelle in a non-section tri-match at Rohanna’s G.C.

West Greene’s Jason Antill finished one stroke off the pace, and Cory Dillinger was third with a 37. Zack Cumberland and Andy Erjavek rounded out the top five spots for Mapletown with 38s.

Andrew Walls shot the low round for Clay-Battelle with a 47.

Mapletown (3-3, 1-3) plays Jefferson-Morgan at 3 p.m. Thursday at Greene County C.C.

Connellsville 206, Geibel Catholic 207 – Both teams call Pleasant Valley Country Club home, but the Falcons survived the course just a bit better than the Gators for a non-section win.

Geibel’s James McGrath was medallist with a 2-over-par 36.

Andrew Broadwater fired a 39, Phil Lucostic had a 40, Zach Bell finished with a 42 and Scott Bell scored a 50.

Jordan Craig was low for Connellsville (5-2) with a 39, Jonathan Luczka shot a 41 and Kevin Bell had a 39. Cody Boors finished with a 44 and Nathan Pritts carded a 45.

Jeannette 248, Frazier 275 – Mike Salvatore shot a low round of 45 as Jeannette cruised to an easy Division II, Section 2 win over Frazier at Greensburg C.C.

Brian Lauffer (47) and Don Binda (49) rounded out the top three for Jeannette.

Tom Farrell shot the low round of 50 for the Commodores.

Football

Beth-Center 20, Jefferson-Morgan 18 – After a 10-day delay, the second half of the Jefferson-Morgan and Beth-Center football game resumed Monday.

The game was called at halftime because of lightning on Aug. 29, where B-C led at halftime, 14-6.

Beth-Center’s Garrett Balas kicked off the scoring at the 3:35 mark in the third quarter with a one-yard touchdown to extend the B-C lead to 20-6.

Jefferson rallied back in the fourth quarter when Jonathan Meyers ran for a one-yard touchdown with 11:07 left in regulation.

Jimmy Basilone threw an 8-yard pass to Matt Ferencak for J-M’s final score at 4:25.

The Rockets Geibel Catholic Friday, while B-C travels to Sto-Rox in non-section action.

Girls’ tennis

Connellsville 3, Norwin 2 – The Lady Falcons’ doubles teams saved the day to help Connellsville win a Section 1-AAA road match.

Megan Parsons and Lauren Hartz won at No. 1 doubles by a 6-1, 7-5 score over Jan Niccolai and Katie Douglas. Amanda Stout and Miranda Hughes secured the victory by a 7-6 (5), 6-0 decision at No. 2 doubles.

Laura Lucas won the lone singles match, a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Nicole D’Antonio at No. 2 singles. Connellsville plays Mount Pleasant in a non-section match this afternoon.

Brownsville 3, Mount Pleasant 2 – The No. 3 singles match between Brownsville’s Chantel Curcio and Mount Pleasant’s Vicki Mull was the decider as Brownsville swept the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches, and Mount Pleasant swept both doubles matches.

Curcio came back after losing the first set 3-6 and claimed the next two sets (6-1, 6-2) to give Brownsville the victory and sole possession of first place in a Section 1-AA match.

“I’ve ranked a lot of matches over the years and it was exciting to see the girls come from behind to win,” said Brownsville coach Dan LoNigro. “The match was on Chantel’s shoulders.”

Christina Libertini kicked things off for Brownsville in the No. 1 singles match with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Brianne Ludwick while Danielle Davison defeated Katie Shaw (7-5, 3-6, 7-5) in the No. 2 singles match.

Amanda Freeman and Stacy Kinneck downed the team of Kelly Davison and Chelsea DeConcilis (6-4, 6-2) in the No. 1 doubles match, while Erica Sukay and Ashley Davis defeated Bethany Seelye and Ashton Restina 7-5, 6-3 in the No. 2 doubles match.

Brownsville (3-0) will play today at home against Jeannette.

Boys’ soccer

Laurel Highlands 5, Monessen 1 – Nick Midlik, Jerrett Pickens and John Michniak each scored and assisted on a goal as Laurel Highlands (2-2, 0-2) rolled to an easy non-section win over Monessen (1-3) at home.

Bryan Lipchinsky and E.J. Regula also scored for the Mustangs. LH goalkeeper Tyler Foreman posted six saves, while Monessen’s Matt Stark had 22 saves.

Laurel Highlands is on the road today in a section match against Baldwin.

Girls’ soccer

Yough 1, Laurel Highlands 0 – The Lady Cougars’ Jessi Balko shut out the visiting Fillies on seven shots for a Section 6-AAA victory.

Emily Easara scored the game’s only goal in the first half. Jenny Smith turned aside 10 shots for Laurel Highlands.

Laurel Highlands (1-2, 2-3-2) travels to Connellsville Wednesday.

Girls’ volleyball

Beth-Center 3, McGuffey 0 – Breanne Bell led with 20 service points as Beth-Center blanked McGuffey in a non-section match. The game scores were 25-13, 25-15 and 25-14.

Samantha Slagle and Breanne Paletta each added nine kills.

Beth-Center opens section today at home against Avella.

Jefferson-Morgan 3, Waynesburg Central 0 – Michelle Fowler and Brittany Coles posted 14 and 10 service points as Jefferson-Morgan handed Waynesburg Central its first loss of the season in a non-section match.

Jessica Johnson added nine kills.
