Turkeyfoot Valley in easy win over Bishop Walsh Seth Tressler scored on an 8-yard rush and also a 55-yard pass from Bill Hinzy as Turkeyfoot Valley rolled to an easy 56-6 win over visiting Bishop Walsh Saturday afternoon.
Tressler totaled two catches for 99 yards, and Hinzy completed 3-of-9 passes for 135 yards and a rushing touchdown.
Two Turkeyfoot backs eclipsed the century mark. Nathan Glass rushed 131 yards on 5 carries and an 85-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Joe Younkin added 101 yards on 12 carries and a 55-yard touchdown. He also claimed five tackles and three sacks.
The Rams posted 403 yards in total offensive and held Bishop Walsh to just 177 yards.
Brett Clevenger started the scoring for Turkeyfoot at the 9:29 mark in the first quarter with a 24-yard interception return.
On the defensive side, Clevenger had 4 1/2 tackles.
With just 16 seconds left in regulation, Cody Colflesh scored on an 83-yard carry.
Bishop Walsh scored its only touchdown on an 85-yard kickoff return in the third quarter by quarterback Chris Hendershot. Hendershot completed 11-of-25 passes for a total of 111 yards.
Turkeyfoot visits Rockwood Saturday.
Girl’s tennis
Connellsville 3, Hempfield 2 – Connellsville’s singles teams provided the margin of victory Friday afternoon, as the Lady Falcons went down fighting in both doubles matches in a Section 1-AAA home victory over Hempfield.
Kristina Grove started things off for Connellsville (3-3, 5-3) with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles. Laura Lucas followed with a straight sets victory at No. 2 singles, and Lindsey Weimer had a tough go of it, but prevailed, 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (2).
Lauren Hartz and Megan Parsons dropped a second set tiebreaker, 7-5, to fall at No. 1 doubles to Chrissy Price and Gennica Jackson.
Connellsville’s Amanda Stout and Miranda Hughes won the first set at No. 2 doubles, 7-5, but Cara Haines and Sarah Atkins rallied for the three-set victory.
Women’s soccer
California (PA) 3, Bloomsburg 2 – The California women’s team improved to 5-1 with a win on the road against Bloomsburg.
The Huskies opened the scoring in the 30th minute.
Brianne Plute tied the score in the 40th minute. Terri Flaherty assisted on the goal. Bridget Brennan scored three minutes later, assisted by Kelli Rees. Plute finished the Vulcan scoring with a goal in the 67th minute. Rees recorded her second assist on Plute’s second goal. Dana Galiffa recorded eight saves in net for the victory.
The women return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Clarion.
Men’s soccer
California (PA) 3, Bloomsburg 1 – The California men’s team improved also improved to 5-1 as they defeated Bloomsburg on the road.
Bloomsburg opened the scoring and the Vulcans followed with three consecutive goals. Emedin Sabic picked up the first goal for California. Victor Brito scored the second Vulcan goal, which was assisted by Donnie Mriscin. Brito added his second goal of the game for the Vulcans, which was assisted by Pete Kariotis.
The men return to action Wednesday when they travel to Alderson Broaddus.
California (PA) 8, Ohio Dominican Republic 1 – The California tennis team improved to 5-0 on the season with a victory over Ohio Dominican University. The Vulcans swept all three doubles matches and won five of the six singles matches.
The doubles wins were highlighted by Olga Gonzalez and Linda Escobedo’s 9-7 win. The team trailed by a 7-3 margin and then won six straight games to get the victory.
Brownsville graduate Gina Pelehac continued on her winning ways, taking her singles match 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Jessica Brown also won her singles match by the score of 6-0, 6-1.
The Vulcans open PSAC play Tuesday when they travel to Clarion.
Men’s baseball
Penn-State Fayette 11, Westmoreland C.C.C. 1; Penn-State Fayette 3, Westmoreland C.C.C. 2 – Frank Faust slapped a two-run double as Penn-State Fayette 10-run ruled Westmoreland Community College in the first of a doubleheader sweep on Saturday.
Winning pitcher Phil Gratchic (2-0) worked five innings, struck out four and walked two, while losing pitcher Brian Horner pitched four innings, allowed seven runs, struck out five and walked six.
Gratchic also had a two-run single in the third inning.
Nate Hissem had two singles for Westmoreland C.C.
In game two, Matt Fanase (2-0) scattered three hits en route to the second win in the doubleheader. Fanase went the distance, struck out four and walked one.
Dan Fuller had the Penn-State’s only extra base hit with a double.
Tony Tempo accounted for all of Westmoreland’s runs with a two-run triple in the first inning.
Penn-State Fayette visits Penn-State New Kensington today for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
