Roaring Lions split doubleheader; Cal routs Fairmont State Phil Gratchic slapped a two-out double in the top of the seventh inning as Penn State-Fayette downs Penn State-New Kensington 5-3 in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday.
The Roaring Lions were down 3-2 going into the top of the seventh when Gratchic drove in the tying and go-ahead runs. Brandon Bryner followed with a triple for the insurance run.
Winning pitcher Steve Zemba (1-0) worked six innings, allowed three runs, struck out one and walked one. Gratchic picked up the save.
Ryan Watson took home the loss.
In the second game, Tom Cosentino singled twice and drove in three of Penn-State New Kensington’s four runs en route to a 4-3 victory over Fayette.
On the mound, Consentino (1-1) went the distance striking out one and allowed no walks.
Losing pitcher Ricky Wilson (0-1) worked 4 1/3 innings, struck out two and allowed nine hits.
Mark Shallenberger tripled for Fayette (5-6, 2-3), while Zemba and Gratchic doubled.
Penn-State Fayette plays Tuesday at home against Westmoreland C.C.C.

California 42, Fairmont State 12 – Wes Clemons raced for touchdown scores of one, 11 and 77 yards as California University of Pa. defeated Fairmont State at home on Saturday.
Clemons totaled 148 yards on 19 carries.
California pounded out 296 yards on the ground with support from Tayon Mitchell who raced 83 yards on eight carries and a touchdown and Robert Calhoun who added 82 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown.
California quarterback Dustin Strayer completed 11-for-16 passes for 111 yards and a touchdown pass.
California plays West Virginia Wesleyan on Sept. 20.
