Area athletes run circles around the competition
This weekend four area athletes ran circles around the competition. Connellsville’s Kenny King, Connellsville’s Shannon Kovack and Laurel Highlands’ Danielle LaPresta all had great individual performances at the 2004 Fayette County Coaches Association Track and Field Meet held at Uniontown’s Bill Power Stadium. Albert Gallatin’s Craig Hriblan gave a dominating performance in the Colonials’ romp on the baseball diamond over Laurel Highlands. While others may have had great weekend performances, it was these four that had the competition running with their tails between their legs.
l Kenny King took home MVP honors on the boys’ side of the Fayette county Coaches Association track and Field Meet. The junior gave a dominating performance finishing with 20 points. King won the 1,600 in 4:26. This was 14 seconds ahead of Albert Gallatin’s Patrick Reagan. He won the 800 in 1:59; seven seconds ahead of teammate Brad Showman. King also anchored two winning relays, the 3,200 and 1,600.
l Fellow Falcon Shannon Kovack took home the MVP on the girls’ side of Saturday’s track and field meet, as the senior earned 24 points to lead the field. Kovack finished first in the 1,600 with a time of 5:40 and the 3,200 with a time of 12:34. The senior finished second in the 800 and first as the anchor of the 3,200 relay team.
l Laurel Highlands’ senior Danielle LaPresta helped lead her team to the girls’ team title at Saturday’s track and field meet, as she finished with a team-high 20 points. LaPresta finished first in the 400 with a time of 1:01.8 and the 800 with a time of 2:26. The Fillies’ senior took home second in the 3,200 relay and finished her impressive day by running the anchor of the victorious 1,600 relay team.
l Craig Hriblan, the lone non-track athlete on this week’s list, pitched his first-ever career no-hitter against Laurel Highlands in the Colonials’ 13-0 victory Saturday. Hriblan struck out 9 and walked four in improving his record to 3-0 on the year. He also helped himself at the plate with a double and a single.
Based on these weekend numbers, it will be a difficult decision to pick the “Weekend Spotlight Athlete.” Tune into News 19 tonight at 7 p.m., 10:30 p.m. and midnight to find out our winner.
