Cunningham, Martin qualify for WPIAL doubles Connellsville’s Gene Cunningham and Josh Martin qualified for the WPIAL doubles tournament next Monday at Norwin as they defeated Canon-McMillan’s Chris Podany and Mark Cerenzia by the scores of 7-6, 7-4, 6-4 in boys’ tennis action.
Tuesday, Cunningham and Martin won their first and second round matches and lost in the semifinals.
“Anytime you go into the WPIAL tournament, you’re going against some talent. We played real well today and if we continue to play the way we have been, we have a chance to do well down there,” Connellsville coach Don Campbell said.
High school baseball
Belle Vernon 15, Geibel Catholic 2 – Jesse Johnson had three singles, two RBI’s and scored a run as Belle Vernon downed Geibel Catholic a non-section game.
Teammate Matt Rowland had two singles, two runs scored and drove in a run.
Winning pitcher Justin Greiner worked all five innings, gave up six hits and struck out eight.
Matt Mascia was the losing pitcher. He allowed 10 hits, nine runs, one walk and struck out one.
Earl Gilbert led the way for Geibel with a triple and a run scored, and Josh Britt had an RBI double and A.J. Ardabell added an RBI single.
Geibel moves to 6-6, while Belle Vernon falls to 4-5.
California 4, Beth-Center 2 – Chris Cox struck out 10 and allowed eight walks in five innings as California defeated Beth-Center in Section 7-A action.
Matt Stay was the losing pitcher. He worked two innings, struck out three and walked one.
Beth-Center is back in action Thursday at home against Geibel Catholic and Allderdice in non-section action on Friday.
The Trojans (7-0, 10-2) visit Bentworth on Thursday.
High school softball
Belle Vernon 7, Ringgold 4 – Elyse Biddle and Brooke Panepinto doubled as Belle Vernon downed Ringgold in a non-section contest.
Biddle and Panepinto each drove in a run.
Winning pitcher Megan Flower (4-1) went the distance. She struck out three and walked one, while Amie Jury came away with the loss.
At the plate, Jury doubled and drove in two runs. Teammate Kayla Badini also doubled for Ringgold.
Turkeyfoot Valley 5, Shade 3 – The Turkeyfoot Valley girls softball team continues to roll and keep its unbeaten streak alive as it defeated Shade at home in West Pac South Conference play.
Jeannette Augustine led the way with two doubles, while Karina Graziani went 2-for-3 with a double.
Lacrisha Reihle went 3-for-4 with three singles.
Brittany Barefoot (7-0) came away with the win. She went the distance for the Lady Rams.
Turkeyfoot (9-0, 6-0) faces Shade (6-2, 6-1) again, on the road at 4:20 p.m. today.
Girls track
Brownsville 69, Bentworth 35 – The Lady Falcons took eight first place finishes to defeat the Lady Bearcats in a Section 5-AA meet.
America Cardine won the 100 high hurdles and long jump.
Ashley Turner outdistanced the field to win the discus with Nicole Williams hitting the height to win the high jump.
Alana Jablonsky won the 100 and Melissa Higman took first in the 1,600.
Brownsville won two of the three relays, taking first in the 3,200 and 400.
Boys track
Bentworth 79, Brownsville 15 – Joe Feick won the 100 and Jarred Mehawlski finished first in the javelin as the Falcons fell in Section 5-AA.
