Mustang on the move Uniontown 13, Laurel Highlands 9 – Uniontown outlasted Laurel Highlands for a Section 2-AAA victory.

Ryan Guthrie’s first-inning, three-run homer was the big blast of the game and shot the Red Raiders out to a quick 3-0 lead.

The Mustangs came back in their half of the inning to take a 4-3 lead, but a pair of runs in the third and one in the fourth put the Red Raiders ahead to stay.

Ryan Robowski grabbed the win, and Cory Borland took the loss.

Mike George had a double and single for the Raiders (3-8, 3-5), Scott Hruby singled twice and Guthrie had a single to go along with his home run.

Nick Stofcheck’s double was the Mustangs’ (308, 20-6) big hit. He also had a pair of singles.

Girls Softball

Turkeyfoot Valley scratched together a pair of runs, and then Karina Graziani made the lead stand for a 2-0 West-Pac South Conference victory Wednesday at Shade. The Lady Rams remain undefeated, improving to 7-0 in the conference and 10-0 overall. Shade slips to 4-2 in the conference and 6-3 overall.

Jeanette Augustine led off the top of the sixth inning with a double. She was sacrificed to third before Vanessa Wheatley brought her home with a single. Ashley Tressler singled Wheatley to third. Casey Metheney drove home Wheatley with a sacrifice fly to center field.

Graziani struck out 10 and walked two to improve to 3-0. Ann Sobieski struck out four and walked two in the loss.

Hempfield 10, Uniontown 0 – Lauren Shaheen twirled a five-inning no-hitter to keep the Lady Spartans atop the Section 3-AAA standings. Shaheen allowed three base runners on two walks and an error while striking out 10.

Brittany Check took the loss for Uniontown, falling to 0-6 while striking out one and walking three.

Laurel Highlands 4, Albert Gallatin 1 – Stacey Batovsky’s run-scoring double in the bottom of the first inning keyed a three-run inning when she came around to score on Keri Smiell’s home run. That was all the offense Jen Barry needed to secure a Section 3-AAA victory. Laurel Highlands improves to 3-2 in the section and 4-4 overall.

Barry (4-4) struck out five and walked two, allowing only four hits. Jessica Lint had a double and triple while Holly Williams stroked a double and single.

Batovsky went 4-for-4 while Abby Martin finished 3-for-4. Mary Beth Oshnack smacked a double for the Fillies.

Belle Vernon 14, Charleroi 0 – The Lady Leopards pounded out 12 hits while winning pitcher Corey Baron allowed only three for a Section 7-AA road victory. Belle Vernon improves to 5-2 in the section and 9-3 overall.

Brooke Panepinto led the hitting parade with a triple, home run and three RBIs. Elyse Biddle had a home run and single. Sarah Jolley and Jillian Kunka both legged out triples while Megan Mascara had two singles for two RBIs.

Baron allowed only singles, two to Rebecca Stottlemayer and one to Briannon Scorza. She struck out six and walked one.

Elizabeth-Forward 9, Brownsville 3 – Three of the Lady Falcons’ errors came in the 5-run second inning to help the Lady Warriors to a Section 7-AA victory. Brownsville falls to 1-5 in the section and 3-6 overall.

Winning pitcher Kathy Kite allowed only three hits, including Amanda Voytovich’s double and a triple by Julia Martini.

Avella 10, Mapletown 2 – Mapletown could only manage three hits off the Avella pitching tandem of Dilanne Bedillion and Chelsea Brownlee in a Section 1-A home loss. Brownlee pitched the final four innings for the win and helped the cause with a double.

Liz Novak (1-8) took the loss, doubling for one of the Lady Maples’ hits.

Mapletown (0-7, 1-8) plays a home doubleheader today with the first game at 2 p.m. against Jefferson-Morgan and the second game at 4 p.m. against Bentworth.

Jefferson-Morgan 5, West Greene 3 – Erica Smoggie went the distance, striking out three and allowing only Rebecca Burns’ single in a Section 1-A. Jefferson-Morgan improves to 2-3 in the section with the Lady Pioneers dropping to 1-5.

Brittany Monack went 3-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs for the Lady Rockets. Kristie Volchko smacked a triple with Lindsay Olson driving in two runs.

California 12, Monessen 2 – The Lady Greyhounds smacked three doubles off winning pitcher Alison Edwards, but the Monessen defense committed three errors and the Lady Trojans had 10 hits for a five-inning non-section home victory.

Edwards (4-6) struck out 10 and walked only one in the victory. The winning pitcher helped her cause with a bases-loaded triple in 5-run fifth inning. Laura McCrory and Amanda McKula both finished with two singles and two RBIs.

Boys tennis

Brownsville 3, Greensburg C.C. 2 – Dan LoNigro’s revamped lineup came through with a key Section 1-AA road victory. Brownsville improves to 7-1 in the section and 7-3 overall.

The Falcons clinched the match on wins by John Marcolini at No. 2 singles, Ian Glumac at No. 3 singles and the No. 1 doubles team of Bryce Connors and Dave Kovachick. Marcolini defeated Alex Spore 6-3, 6-3 and Glumac straight-setted David Wong, 6-2, 6-2. Connors and Kovachick dropped only four games to secure the win.

Connellsville 4, Norwin 1 – The Falcons had a rougher time of it than the final score would indicate, but the visitors held on for a non-section victory. Connellsville (9-2, 6-2) returns to Section 5-AAA action this afternoon with a match at Canon-McMillan.

Josh Martin dropped his first set at No. 1 singles, but rallied 6-3, 6-1 in the final two sets to defeat Matt Yost. Gene Cunningham repeated the pattern at No. 2 singles, rallying from a one-set deficit for a three-set win. Nathan Pritts won a tiebreaker in the first set at No. 3 singles, but Nezari Dorosh tied the match before Pritts secured the win with a 6-3 third set.

Scott Campbell and Troy Smith lost their first set at No. 1 doubles, but won the last two, 7-6 (5) and 6-1, for the win.

Boys track

Southmoreland 103½, Mount Pleasant 46½ – The Scotties and Vikings needed two days, but the wait was worth it because Southmoreland secured its fifth consecutive Section 3-AA title with an easy road victory over rival Mount Pleasant.

Tim Fratto was a busy man for the Scotties, winning the 100 (11.2), triple jump (39-3½) and long jump (19-5½). Jon Sebek won on the track (200, 400, 1600 relay) as well as in the field (high jump). Nathan Ozoroski also split time with first place finishes in the 300 intermediate hurdles and the javelin. Nick Barron picked up wins in the 1,600 and 3,200.

Waynesburg Central 92, Washington 57; Waynesburg Central 139, Jefferson-Morgan 11 – The Raiders secured another Section 5-AA title with a pair of victories over the Prexies and Rockets. Waynesburg finishes the section schedule with a 9-0 record and now awaits the WPIAL Class AA team playoffs next week.

Jack Haines had a productive day with wins in the 1,600 (4:34), 800 (2:09) and 3,200 (11:12). Scott Cree had first place finishes in the 200 (23.92), 400 (54.37) and 100 (11.44). Jake Raddish won the high jump (6-2) with Adam Lemley picking up first places in the shot put (46-1) and discus (110-5).

Girls track

Waynesburg Central 123, Jefferson-Morgan 23; Washington 86, Waynesburg Central 60 – The Lady Raiders split the Section 5-AA triangular meet to finish the regular season 6-3.

Katie Aldhizer had a good day against the field, winning the 100 (13.7) and 200 (27.49). Aldhizer won the long jump (13-7) against Jefferson-Morgan. Nikki Jones swept the throwing events, winning the javelin (84-6), discus (98-1) and shot put (31-3). Randi Patton took first in the pole vault with a best effort of 8-6.

The Lady Rockets’ Rachel Roberts defeated both teams in the hurdles, winning the 100 highs in 18.01 seconds and the 300 intermediates in 53.8. Melissa Cox won the 400 against Waynesburg in 1:07.34.

College baseball

Penn State-Fayette, the Eberly Campus 10, CCAC-South 9 – The Roaring Lions pushed their lead to 10-5 after seven innings, and needed all the insurance they could muster for the road victory.

Penn State-Fayette improves to 5-9 in the conference and 5-12 overall.

Mark Shallenberger led off the seventh inning for the Roaring Lions with the third of his three singles, moving to third on an error. Phil Gratchic drove Shallenberger home with a double, advancing to third on a wild pitch. Josh Franks brought Gratchic home with a sacrifice fly.

Ricky Wilson picked up the win for Penn State-Fayette. Gratchic pitched the ninth for the save, adding to his two-hit, two-RBI performance at the plate. Matt Fanase had three hits and an RBI while Wilson drove home two runs.
