Trailing by four points at halftime, Waynesburg rallied in the second half Wednesday for a 49-46 non-conference victory over visiting La Roche College. The Yellow Jackets outscored the visitors in the final 20 minutes, 30-23. Lila St. Denis was the lone Waynesburg player in double figures with 10 points. She also had six rebounds. Candice Eyerman added eight points and eight rebounds for Waynesburg (2-3).
Gaston Truly was in double figures for La Roche (0-4) with 13 points.
Men’s basketball
California (Pa.) 84, Bloomsburg 51 – Drew Schifino and Damar Ruffin shared game-scoring honors with 17 points each as the Vulcans cruised past Bloomsburg for a non-conference road victory. California improves to 2-2 while the Huskies drop to 2-5.
The Vulcans held a 45-23 halftime lead, adding to their lead by racing off to an 8-0 run in the opening minutes of the second half.
Boris Mesnager had 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds for California.
Ryan Nenstiel scored 11 points off the bench to lead Bloomsburg with Bob Nenstiel and Marion Rose adding nine points apiece.
The Vulcans are in action this weekend with crossover women-men doubleheaders at Kutztown on Saturday and at West Chester on Sunday.
Bethany (W.Va.) 55, Muskingum (Ohio) 53 – Mike Drahos’ lay-up with 21 seconds remaining in the game was the difference to give the Bison a victory in Bethany’s home opener. Matt Drahos led Bethany with 12 points. Uniontown graduate Brandon Duncan, Mike Drahos, and Chris Stephens all scored 10 points for the victors.
