High School Basketball Opening Night

Local teams christen 2004-05 season A whirlwind of high school basketball begins tonight and Laurel Highlands will be in the center of the storm.

Harold “Horse” Taylor Memorial Gymnasium will host three games at Laurel Highlands Senior High School, while two more contests will take place at Laurel Highlands Junior High School in the Laurel Highlands Round Ball Shootout.

All in all, 25 area teams will be in action, most of them in tournaments all across the region, including Uniontown’s boys and girls squads, which will participate in the Keystone Oaks Tournament.

The Red Raiders have the unenviable task of taking on defending WPIAL Quad-A champion Chartiers Valley in a 5:30 p.m. game, while the Lady Raiders take on the host Lady Eagles at 7 p.m.

The Laurel Highlands girls will start the festivities at the LH Senior High School with a 5:30 p.m. game against Greensburg Salem. The second game pits the Albert Gallatin boys against Mount Pleasant at 7 p.m., while the LH boys and Connellsville clash in the nightcap at 8:30 p.m.

Four girls teams will take the floor at LH Junior High School as Connellsville and West Greene meet at 6 p.m., and Albert Gallatin and Brashear battle at 7:45 p.m.

Southmoreland also is playing tournament host tonight. The Lady Scotties welcome Frazier at 7:30 p.m., followed by the Scotties and South Allegheny at 9 p.m.

Boys teams also taking part in tournaments tonight are Frazier vs. Charleroi at Serra Catholic (5:30 p.m.), Beth-Center vs. Avella at the Fort Cherry (5 p.m.), California vs. Trinity at Trinity (7:30 p.m.), Jefferson-Morgan vs. Quigley at Chartiers-Houston (6 p.m.), Belle Vernon vs. Elizabeth-Forward at E-F, (8 p.m.), and Waynesburg Central at Thomas Jefferson.

Also in action in non-section 7:30 p.m. games are Mapletown and Carmichaels. The Maples travel to Burgettstown, while the Mikes host South Fayette.

In more girls action, Charleroi will play host to a pair of local teams in its tournament. Geibel Catholic and Monessen tip off at 6 p.m., followed by Carmichaels and the host Lady Cougars at 7:30 p.m.

Wayensburg and West Allegheny girls play at Fort Cherry (3:30 p.m.), and Jefferson-Morgan and Burgettstown meet at Avella (6 p.m.)

Also, Brownsville travels to West Greene and California hosts Chartiers-Houston, both at 7:30 p.m.
