AG girls top Fillies; Bortz win Falcons’ debut against Jefferson-Morgan
Albert Gallatin out-scored Laurel Highlands 13-0 in the second period to turn an 11-9 deficit into a 22-11 lead and went on to defeat the visiting Fillies 41-33 in non-section girls basketball action Monday night. The victory avenged the Lady Colonials’ 46-37 loss to the Fillies in the Laurel Highlands Round Ball Shootout on Saturday.
Albert Gallatin’s Rachel Dunham converted eight of 11 free throws in leading the Lady Colonials (2-1) with 10 points, and Jessica Lint followed with eight points. Lydia Davis scored five of her seven points in the game-turning second quarter, and Mallory Adamovich hit a pair of 3-pointers in also scoring seven for coach Shea Fleenor’s squad.
Albert Gallatin now needs only one more victory to match last season’s total.
Amber Sanner tossed in three treys on her way to a game-high 14 points for Laurel Highlands (1-2). Kayla Ashton followed with nine points.
The Fillies won the junior varsity game 36-35 when Heather Burton hit a 3-pointer in the waning seconds.
Ringgold 48, Uniontown 31 – Ringgold opened its season with a 17-point non-section victory over visiting Uniontown.
The Lady Raiders (0-3) host Latrobe tonight.
Carmichaels 58, Bentworth 51 – Megan Stuvek poured in a game-high 21 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as Carmichaels held off visiting Bentworth in a non-section game.
Courtney Newland totaled 15 points and 14 boards for coach Jim Lane’s Lady Mikes (1-2), and Jami Menhart contributed 10 points and seven assists.
Cassie Yannacci and Laura Shaffer led the Lady Bearcats (1-2) with 16 and 13 points, respectively. Brittany Speed added 10.
Carmichaels led 16-12, 30-27 and 46-40 at the breaks.
Beth-Center 40, Jefferson-Morgan 34 – Courtney Kurowski scored 14 points and pulled down 23 rebounds as Beth-Center defeated visiting Jefferson-Morgan in a non-section battle.
The Lady Bulldogs (1-0) led 17-12 at halftime and 30-20 after three periods before holding off the Lady Rockets (0-1) in the final frame.
Amanda Bolin added 12 points for Beth-Center, and Jamie Stotka chipped in with eight.
Rachael Weaver scored a game-high 16 points for Jefferson-Morgan, and Charity McCann had nine.
Avella 35, Waynesburg Central 25 – Avella used an 11-2 advantage in the third period to propel it past host Waynesburg Central in a non-section clash.
The Lady Eagles led 8-6, 18-12 and 29-14 at the breaks.
Ashley Midler paced Avella (3-0) with 12 points.
Jeanette Wonsettler and Megan Summersgill each scored eight points to lead the Lady Raiders (1-2).
Southmoreland 58, McGuffey 39 – Vanessa Abel came within one rebound and one steal of recording a triple-double as Southmoreland charged past visiting McGuffey in a non-section contest.
Abel totaled 22 points, nine steals and nine boards as the Lady Scotties improved to 2-1. Terry Bundridge and Kelly Rollinson followed with 12 and nine points, respectively.
Stephanie Lilly topped the Lady Highlanders in scoring with 16 points, including four 3-pointers.
Rockwood 55, Turkeyfoot 49 – Rockwood used a 17-10 advantage in the fourth quarter to pull out a victory over host Turkeyfoot Valley.
Courtney Smith led the Lady Rams (0-1) with 16 points and seven steals. Vanessa Wheatley added 13 points, and Mandy Hanft chipped in with five points and six assists.
Boys basketball
Brownsville 57, Jefferson-Morgan 38 – George Bortz won his debut as Brownsville’s boys basketball coach as the Falcons defeated host Jefferson-Morgan in non-section action.
Scott Fraley led Brownsville with 16 points, while Adam Kezmarsky and Jacob Davis followed with 12 apiece.
“We’re just trying to get better one game at a time,” said Bortz, who was active on the sidelines almost to a fault in directing his team. “I have to get used to the coaching line. I got warned once for going over it.”
A new rule this season allows coaches to stand during play within a designated coach’s box.
The Falcons led 14-11, 30-20 and 42-33 at the breaks.
J.W. Popielarcheck led coach Jim Romanus’ Rockets (0-1) with 10 points, while Jarrod Moskola and Matt Barbetta added seven apiece. Popielarcheck and Barbetta each hit a pair of 3-pointers.
Chartiers-Houston 59, Mapletown 40 – Mapletown jumped out to a 16-14 lead, but Chartiers-Houston came back to take a 31-22 halftime lead and went on to beat the host Maples.
The Bucs (2-0) pulled away with a 14-4 edge in the final period.
Jordan Cypher hit three 3-pointers in scoring 11 points for Chartiers-Houston. Derek Lowe and Jacob France followed with 10 apiece.
Zach Cumberland also made three treys and led Mapletown (0-2) with a game-high 15 points. Cory Dillinger and Brad Hartley added 10 and nine points, respectively.
Waynesburg 57, Canon-McMillan 50 – Waynesburg Central evened its record at 1-1 with a seven-point victory over Canon-McMillan (0-2) in the Thomas Jefferson Tournament.
Steel Valley 54, California 50 – Steel Valley sent visiting California to its third consecutive defeat under first-year coach Phil Pergola.
The Ironmen improved to 2-1.
Girls swimming
Laurel Highlands 95, Thomas Jefferson 89 – Theresa Reilly and Erin Perry each picked up two individual wins and a pair of relay victories as host Laurel Highlands topped Thomas Jefferson.
Reilly placed first in the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle, combined with Casey Martin, Perry and Kelly Houston to win the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay.
Perry won the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke.
Other individual winners for the undefeated Fillies (3-0) were Houston in the 200 freestyle, and Martin in the 500 freestyle.
Boys swimming
Laurel Highlands 98, Thomas Jefferson 78 – Laurel Highlands hit the WPIAL qualifying mark in eight different events on its way to a victory over visiting Thomas Jefferson.
Jimmy Tesauro qualified with individual victories in the 50 freestyle (:24.20) and the 100 freestyle (:54.22), and relay triumphs in the 200 individual medley (1:55.83) along with Alex Mundel, Dave Johnson and Adam Collins, and the 200 freestyle (1:42.62) along with Chris Hunchuck, Ben Mundel and Johnson.
Collins also hit the qualifying mark in the 100 backstroke with a pool-record time of :54.87 and the 200 IM (2:07.01).
Steve Hunchuck also made the WPIAL time for LH in winning the 100 breaststroke (1:07.72).
Other individual winners for the unbeaten Mustangs (3-0) were Steve Hunchuck in the 200 freestyle and Chris Hunchuck in the 500 freestyle,
The 400 freestyle relay team of Greg Guseman, Alex Mundel, Chris Hunchuck and Tony Marghella was also victorious.
