Rockets beat Bulldogs at the buzzer Both teams had a chance to win, but it was Josh Lawrence who came through in the clutch with the winning jumper as the buzzer sounded to give Jefferson-Morgan a 49-48 non-section road victory Tuesday at Beth-Center.
The Bulldogs (1-2) had some troubles at the foul line in the final eight minutes, keeping the game close. Both teams had comfortable leads only to have the advantage disappear.
Lawrence led the Rockets (1-3) with 17 points, including two 3-pointers. Jarrod Moskola was also in double figures for the visitors with 10.
Larry Booze was the high scorer for the Bulldogs with 16. Garrett Balas added 15 for Beth-Center.
Carmichaels 74, Bentworth 35 – The Mikes cruised out to a 15-4 first quarter lead and never looked back for a non-section win over the visiting Bearcats. Carmichaels evened its season record at 1-1.
Jared Lapkowicz was the go-to guy for the Mikes, scoring 21 points on the strength of five 3-pointers. Tyrone Pinson contributed 19 points to the winning effort with Jeff Lapkowicz also in double figures with 10 points.
Girls basketball
Southmoreland 59, South Allegheny 55 – Vanessa Abel continued her early season assault, scoring nearly half of the Lady Scots’ points in a non-section road victory. Abel scored a game-high 29 points to lead Southmoreland.
Terri Bundridge was also in double figures for Southmoreland (3-1) with 12 points. Ashlee Wygonik led a trio of South Allegheny players in double figures with 21. Cari Skiffington scored 16 and Dianna Schell added 10.
Waynesburg 52, Jefferson-Morgan 31 – The Lady Raiders led at all the breaks, opening with a first quarter lead of 20-10 and extending their advantage over the final three quarters for a non-section road victory.
Megan Summersgill led Waynesburg (2-2) with 14 points. Jeanette Wonsettler was next in the scoring column with 12 points while Lauren Becker had 11.
Rachael Weaver scored 16 points in the Lady Rockets’ opening game and matched her total in the loss to Waynesburg. Jefferson-Morgan (0-2) travels to Chartiers-Houston tonight.
Latrobe 55, Uniontown 44 – The Lady Wildcats built a 15-point lead through three quarters, cruising to a non-section win at Uniontown.
Nine players scored for Latrobe with Courtney Sherwin leading the way with 11 points.
Cherese Hodge led Uniontown (0-4) with 16 points. Candace Adams and Katie Fisher scored nine points apiece.
Women’s basketball
Waynesburg 58, Penn State-Altoona 49 – The Yellow Jackets held a slim 3-point halftime lead, and then managed to hold off visiting Penn State-Altoona for a non-conference home victory.
Candice Eyerman and Katie Lewandowski shared game-scoring honors for Waynesburg (4-4) with 17 points each. Lila St. Denis was strong on the boards with 10 rebounds. Lewandowski led the floor game with four assists.
Tara Stock led Penn State-Altoona (1-4) with 20 points and nine rebounds.
