Connellsville wrestlers shut out McKeesport, 80-0 The Connellsville wrestling team didn’t have much of a tussle Friday night, trouncing McKeesport, 80-0, for an easy Section 2-AAA road victory.
Tyler Nicholson had the easiest time of all with a forfeit win at 103 pounds. P.J. Holden (112), Steven Bell (125), Eric McGuinness (130), Ashtin Primus (135), Zach Snyder (140), Josh Martin (145), Adam Bucci (152), Jason Doppelheuer (189), Josh Brewer (215) and Justin Haines (275) all won by fall. Buddy Sines (160) and Cody Pujia (119) won by technical fall while Adam Knepper carried a major decision at 171 pounds.
Connellsville (3-0) hosts Kiski Area on Tuesday in a key early season match.
Laurel Highlands 38, Mars 32; Laurel Highlands 62, Carlynton 9 – The Mustangs had a good start in the South Hills Classic Dual Tournament at Bethel Park with a pair of victories.
Cameron Muma (112), Josh Boyle (119), Greg Hogan (135), Nick Browne (140), Zane Breakiron (145), Dave Mari (171), and Roy Knox (275) were victorious for the Mustangs in the win over the Planets.
Brandon Lawerance (103) won by forfeit against the Rams, as did Mike Sible (189), Knox (215) and Bill Kubina (275). Boyle (119), Josh Klink (125), Browne (140), and Breakiron (145) all won by fall. Buster Langeri scored a technical fall at 152 while Mari won by a 9-4 decision at 171 pounds.
Boys basketball
Albert Gallatin 59, Belle Vernon 48 – The Colonials scored half the game output in the fourth quarter to rally for a non-section road victory. Albert Gallatin trailed 32-29 after three quarters, but outscored its hosts, 30-16, in the final eight minutes.
Jawaan Alston led the Colonials (3-1) with 20 points. T.J. Hall scored 14 and Jarrod Lint added 10 for Albert Gallatin.
Matt Rowland was the only player for Belle Vernon (2-3) in double figures with a game-high 27 points.
Beth-Center 40, Carmichaels 39 – Garrett Balas’ 3-pointer with about 30 seconds to go in the game was the difference in the Bulldogs’ non-section home victory. The Mikes led by six points after the first quarter, only to trail by a point at the half. The two teams played to a 13-13 third quarter.
Balas was the only player for the Bulldogs (2-2) in double digits, scoring half his squad’s total with a game-high 20 points.
Jared Lapkowicz scored 12 for the Mikes (3-2) with brother Jeff and Derek Maynard both scoring 11.
Bentworth 51, Jefferson-Morgan 47 – The Rockets outscored the home team 30-24 in the bookend quarters, but the Bearcats carried the middle quarters, 27-17, for a close non-section home win.
Jarrod Moskola led Jefferson-Morgan (1-5) with 15 points. Alan Selvoski scored 13 for the Bearcats (4-2) with Lloyd Williamson adding 12.
Girls basketball
Waynesburg Central 58, Carmichaels 44 – The Lady Raiders broke open a close game with a 22-10 second quarter, and kept rolling along for a non-section win at Carmichaels. Waynesburg extended its lead to 19 points after three quarters before Carmichaels rallied for a 16-8 fourth quarter.
Jeanette Wonsettler led Waynesburg (3-2) with 22 points. Teammate Megan Summersgill added 19.
Megan Stuvek scored a game-high 26 points for the Lady Mikes (2-3).
Southmoreland 46, Jeannette 27 – The Lady Scots outscored the visiting Lady Jayhawks in each quarter for a non-section home victory. Southmoreland led 11-3, 13-9 and 8-5 at the quarter breaks.
Vanessa Abel continued her strong start for Southmoreland (4-1) with 19 points. Kelly Rollinson was in double figures with 10 points, making 5-of-6 free throw attempts. Terri Bundridge also scored 10 points, making 8-of-9 foul shots.
Sam Brewer made three 3-pointers for Jeannette (0-3) to lead the Lady Jayhawks with nine points.
Frazier 36, Mapletown 26 – The Lady Commodores didn’t have anyone in double figures, but the offense put up enough numbers Thursday night for a non-section victory. Emily Null and Amanda White both scored eight points for Frazier (2-2) with Larissa Kulikoski adding 7.
Mary Kocerka led the Lady Maples with 10 points. Brittanni Schock and Brittany Buckhalter both scored six points each.
