Unbeaten West Virginia wins sixth straight
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) – Tyrone Sally scored 17 points to lead West Virginia to a 71-47 victory over Coppin State on Saturday, and the Mountaineers’ record improved to 6-0 for the first time since the 1982-83 season. West Virginia opened the game on a 14-0 run, sinking 3-pointers on five of the team’s first six shots.
Coppin State (2-6) committed 18 turnovers and shot only 37 percent from the floor. The Eagles were unable to get closer than seven points, and trailed by as many as 30 points.
Sally scored 12 of his 17 points in the first half, and shot 4-of-5 from 3-point range.
The Mountaineers did not miss a field goal attempt until the 16:10 mark in the first half.
Pat Beilein scored 14 points, including four the Mountaineers’ 12 3-pointers. Mike Gansey added 10 points.
It was the fourth game this season that West Virginia scored ten or more 3-pointers.
Coppin State dropped to 0-13 against Big East opponents all-time. Nicholas King led all scorers with 22, while Darryl Proctor added 12.
