Carmichaels built a 25-16 lead through three quarters, and then held off a fourth quarter rally for a 32-27 Section 2-A victory at California. The Lady Mikes improve to 2-0 in the section and 4-4 overall. The Lady Trojans fall to 0-2 in the section and 0-4 overall.
Aly Staun led Carmichaels with 12 points. Julie Evans scored 12 points for California.
West Greene 50, Jefferson-Morgan 40 – Rachel Phillips had a strong all-around game, just missing a triple-double as the Lady Pioneers topped the Lady Rockets in Section 2-A action.
Phillips scored a game-high 21 points, including two three-pointers and an 11-of-14 showing at the free throw line. She also dished out 11 assists and pulled down eight rebounds to go with three steals and two blocks.
West Greene’s Allison Hildreth also reached double figures, scoring 12 points.
The Lady Pioneers (2-3, 1-0) led 12-8 after one quarter, but the Lady Rockets fought back to take a 26-22 halftime-lead. West Greene forged back in front with a 15-8 third-quarter advantage.
Carly Largent sank seven shots from the field to pace Jefferson-Morgan with 14 points, while teammate Ashley Phillips added 12.
Connellsville 42, Greensburg Salem 35 – The difference was the second half with the Lady Falcons outscoring the visitors, 26-16, for a Section 1-AAAA home victory. Connellsville improves to 1-1 in the section and 4-2 overall. The Lady Lions drop to 0-2 in the section and 4-3 overall.
Rebecca McGee was the only Lady Falcon in double figures with 10 points. Anna Marie Olesky was in double figures for Greensburg Salem with 13 points.
Kiski Area 57, Albert Gallatin 49 – Lindsey Kurec scored a game high 23 points for the Lady Cavaliers for a Section 1-AAAA road victory. Kiski improve to 2-0 in the section and 5-2 overall. The Lady Colonials fall to 0-2 and 3-4.
Blair Faul was also in double figures with 10 points for Kiski.
Jessica Lint led Albert Gallatin with 17 points. Rachel Dunham added 10.
Indiana 61, Laurel Highlands 51 – The home squad won the Section 3-AAA contest despite a 32-point performance by the Fillies’ Kayla Ashton. The loss drops Laurel Highlands to 0-2 in the section and 1-7 overall while the victory lifts Indiana to 2-0 in the section and 5-2 overall.
Ashton made seven 3-point goals for her game-high total with Taylor Johns in double figures with 12 points.
Rachel Hurly led the home squad with 24 points. Jamie Sogelsonger and Elizabeth North both scored 10.
Yough 44, Uniontown 42 – The visitors had a couple chances with less than 10 seconds to go in the game, but the Lady Cougars survived for a Section 3-AAA victory. Both teams are 1-1 in the section with the Lady Red Raiders dropping to 2-4 overall and Yough improving to 2-5.
Katie Fisher hit six 3-pointers to lead Uniontown with 19 points. Marissa Voytek added 13.
Jenny Coughenour was the only player in double figures for the Lady Cougars with 14 points.
Derry 55, Southmoreland 51 – The Lady Trojans outscored the home squad in the second half, 34-20, to rally for a Section 3-AAA road victory. Vanessa Abel continued her assault of the 2004-05 season with a team-high 29 points for the Lady Scots.
Waynesburg Central 56, Steel Valley 44 – The Lady Raiders led 32-14 at the half, and made the lead stand in the second half for a Section 4-AAA victory.
Megan Summersgill led a trio of Waynesburg players in double figures with 21 points. Jeanette Wonsettler scored 15 for the Lady Raiders (1-1, 4-4) and Miatta Toothman added 10.
Fort Cherry 75, Brownsville 35 – Nikki Stoding led three Lady Indians in double figures with 18 points as Fort Cherry breezed past Brownsville in Section 5-AA action.
Tiffany Thompson added 15 points, and Natalie Engel 14 for the winners, which improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in section play.
Julia Martini paced Brownsville (1-2, 0-2) with 13 points, with teammate Laranda Isaac adding seven.
Fort Cherry took control of the game from the outset, leading 22-4 after one quarter.
Monessen 74, Geibel Catholic 33 – The Lady Greyhounds scored 41 points in the first half, cruising to a non-section victory over the visiting Lady Gators. Geibel falls to 1-6 overall. Alicia Stein and Terrial Pearson both scored 14 points for Monessen. Nicole Berry led Geibel with 11 points.
Boys swimming
Laurel Highlands 97, Derry 79 – The Mustangs took first in all but the 200 medley relay to defeat the Trojans at home in a non-section win. Laurel Highlands remains undefeated, improving to 5-0 overall.
Adam Collins had a school-record and WPIAL-qualifying time of 4:59.97 in the 500 freestyle, winning a second race with a qualifying time of 55.09 seconds in the 100 freestyle.
Steve Hunchuck won the 200 freestyle in 2:03.75 and swam a WPIAL-qualifying time of 1:07.83 to win the 100 breaststroke.
Chris Hunchuck took first in the 200 individual medley in a WPIAL-qualifying time of 2:16.44.
Jimmy Tesauro was first in the 50 freestyle in 24.23 seconds and had a WPIAL-qualifying time of 53.90 seconds in the 100 freestyle.
Dave Johnson won the diving competition with 141.85 points. Tesauro, Ben Mundel, Chris Hunchuck and Collins won the 200 freestyle relay while the foursome of Tesauro, Alex Mundel, Steve Hunchuck and Collins took first in the 400 freestyle relay.
Girls swimming
Derry 96, Laurel Highlands 87 – The Fillies dropped a close non-section meet to the visiting Lady Trojans despite several fine individual performances.
Laurel Highlands slips to 3-2 overall.
Theresa Reilly won the 200 freestyle in 2:11.26 and had a WPIAL-qualifying time of 56.67 seconds to win the 100 freestyle. She joined Erin Perry, Kelly Houston and Jeannette Mayfield to win the 200 freestyle relay (1:51.56) and Laura Koposka, Elizabeth Ulmer, and Casey Martin to win the 400 freestyle relay in 4:25.91.
Perry won the 200 individual medley in 2:31.41 while Houston finished first in the 50 freestyle in 28.09 seconds.
Boys basketball
Conemaugh Valley 85, Turkeyfoot Valley 75 – Four players scored in double figures for Conemaugh Valley, including two over 20 points, for a non-section road victory.
Josh Lupek (26), Vince Turner (20), Rory Marshall (12) and Evan Thompson (10) all were in double digits for the visitors.
Nathan Glass led the Rams (0-3) with 22 points and seven rebounds.
Tim Wass had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, as did Bill Hinzy with 10 assists and 11 points.
Eric Wass had a well-rounded performance with 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Wrestling
Albert Gallatin 52, Ringgold 23 – The Colonials dropped only three bouts, two by forfeit, to rout the Rams in Section 2-AAA action Wednesday night.
Jeff Hicks (125), Justin Loring (135), Dave Mitchell (189) and Allen Myers (275) won by forfeit for Albert Gallatin.
Lance Bryson (152), Mark Brown (160) and Charlie Belch (171) all won by fall.
Brad Zitney won by major decision at 130 pounds, and Dave Bryson (145) and Rob Blosser (215) won by decision.
